This is a requirement before becoming a senior dev. If you cover anything up, spin anything, you fail. They must be able to trust that when the shit hits the fan that your reporting accurately reflects reality. Plus if you ever get into a situation where it's your word against someone else's that you are beyond suspicion.

If you react with a loud ouch and act like you instantly swat your cat in response. But don't make contact or barely touch them. You aren't trying to punish or anything, just showing them a reaction. Then instantly go back to love and pets. That's how they signal to each other not to bite so hard. They might look shocked for a second, but it hopefully will prevent bites. And they might never do it again. The key is to make sure they know you are not angry just hurt. They still will give love bites, but mine doesn't break skin anymore.

I mean, we're talking about surveillance in front of someone's front door versus surveillance of massive public areas that blanket cities. This is a very slippery slope.
