You are lucky to have the cast iron, there's not much you can't do in a well seasoned pan. To bring it back from being rusted, scrub it with an acid (vinegar, lemon juice or barkeeper's friend powder) and some salt as an abrasive to take the rust off, oil it up and start cooking. Keep at the cleaning until wiping the pan clean doesn't make a paper towel red with rust.

Rice! I could not get it to cook properly until I found a combination of a timed induction plate and a 2 qt enameled Descoware pot with a tight fitting lid. Once the induction plate died, rice never came out properly.

The solution was to get a dedicated rice cooker. Now we eat it all the time because it's so easy.

Those are double-hung windows. I had an old house with double hung once upon a time. What we did to stop drafts in a mild winter when we left the window a/c in place was to roll up towels and stuff them in the cracks. It doesn't look nice but it works to keep heat inside.
