The red colored areas start at a relatively low density for being the highest segment on a density map of San Francisco.

Seeing that nickname brought me back. There was also UnSafeway for the Safeway on Fillmore, which has since closed. I think the Safeway on Mission between 29th and 30th should get the title of UnSafeway now.

And like our good friend Charlie Kirk, whose fentanyl overdose caused him to bleed out through a hole in his neck, Saudi Arabia will bleed out its oil onto the Arabian Desert.

Yeah crime like that is very very rare here compared to other places. No one I know has ever been held at gunpoint, or been robbed, or anything like that. But it’s really the most hyper capitalist place in the US right now, so I find the idea of SF being the poster child for liberalism and the target of Fox News’s ire, funny.
Thanks for the recommendation, we’re actually planning on going to the ferry building this weekend!

SF is absolutely not as dangerous as the media portrays it, but I do not know a single person that hasn't had at least one frightening interaction with someone either high on drugs or in some sort of extreme mental health crisis. Whether that's someone coming up to scream at you, waving around a piece of metal or a bat, or throwing something at you. The worst was a homeless person attempted to throw a can of Coke at two older women, but he missed, and hit my wife instead. She didn't get injured, luckily.
This is not a common occurrence mind you, it's been years since anything of note has happened to me. And anecdotally, the problem is worse for women. Again, 99.99% of homeless people will not give you any trouble, and most of the time you see someone walking around talking to themselves they don't even notice you. IMO I think it's good to share stories like yours, but I also think it's useful to state that at best, seeing the homeless situation here is extremely depressing and at worst, it's very occasionally frightening and dangerous.
Born in the bay, lived in SF for 15 years now. The renting situation in SF has never been worse than it is now. I am extremely worried when OpenAI and Anthropic go public. The amount of money that will flood into SF is staggering, and I'm sure none of it will be put to good use. The situation here from homelessness, rent prices, and infrastructure is just a complete failure of government at all levels.

Mine does as well. I’ve had this card in Apple Wallet for years. Don’t remember if I created this card brand new or transferred it from a plastic card.

Not that I necessarily doubt what he's saying regarding spies, nor do I doubt the power of Pegasus and other tools that we don't even know about, this person did not develop software for Apple. He worked at the Genius Bar and also worked as an editorial assistant for Apple Music. I would be at least slightly skeptical of what he's saying in this interview.

They had to add dots to the windows and doors because people kept running into them.

Perhaps I'm just ignorant, but I always see these floor-to-ceiling window buildings get the maximum environmental certification for being extremely green. I know the glass used in these buildings is different to the ones used in standard windows that most of us have, but feels like this would let more heat in when the sun is shining and let out more heat when the sun isn't shining vs another material.

Truckee is one of the snowiest cities in the US, with 206 inches, more than 17 feet, of snow per year.

If you want to feel better, you should Google how much nurses at UCSF make in their first few years. Yes, it's difficult to get in there, but something to aim for!

My view as well. Brought a tear to my eye 🥹

The sign should really say:
WEEKDAY COMMUTE HOURS
HOV 3+
OTHER TIMES
BUSSES ONLY
With another sign that has more information. I don't commute over the Bay Bridge, but I do cross it somewhat regularly, and the series of signs for this lane have always been confusing to me.

Fun fact: as of 2024, California requires officers to tell you why they pulled you over before asking any questions.

Before we watched it, my wife and I saw news about how they used the most fake blood out of any movie. We were about 3/4 of the way through and one of us remarked that there had been blood but not that much. However, once we got to the end, we understood.

You are correct, but what u/Reach-for-the-sky_15 was saying was that no frames from your video call is sent to Apple or any other service. All analysis happens on the device.

FWIW we had our kitchen redone in San Francisco, which likely has a similar price to LA, and we paid 25k for high end cabinets and 37k for labor. We had no plumbing nor gas lines that had to move, but they had to redo the electric in the kitchen since the old kitchen was knob-and-tube. Sink, faucet, new lights, etc were all paid for by us separately.

My in-laws are in Las Vegas and we visit them throughout the year. Agreed about the air conditioning. You're really not spending a lot of time outside. It goes house -> car -> destination. There are some outdoor malls, like Downtown Summerlin, but those have misters that can make walking tolerable, at least in the evenings.
However, by far the most annoying part is taking our dog out. We live in a temperate climate normally and don't have to worry about it being too cold or too hot to take her for a walk. But when we're in Las Vegas, I have to get up very early, before the sun starts hitting the pavement, to take her out. In the afternoons, I have to drive to a nearby park to have her walk under trees, on grass, to make sure she doesn't burn her paws. And it's still unbearably hot after about 5 minutes. We also have to exercise her inside, though this isn't a problem for us because our niece could play with her indefinitely.

At some point in the story they also discovered some old American artifacts. I believe they referred to George Washington as a king or emperor?
You also see the word "Mericanii" throughout the book, which sounds a lot like "American," but I don't think it's actually revealed until that same part of the story.
I would react like this if Mungo comes out as a liberal.
