You're thinking of a different kind of determinism. Deterministic output of a program is obviously necessary. I'm talking about the determinism of the internals of an application itself. The output of an AI model when generating the program itself.

AeroNotix

If you're referring to deterministic output of an AI generated program my judgement based on using AI and seeing it take off within the spaces I work will see the industry largely stop caring about determinism for most programs.

When was the last time you looked at the code for a compiled executable, or looked at the bytecode for the CLR you program against? Maybe once in a blue moon for most programmers. AI generated output will become what a compiled executable was when the first higher level languages started gaining traction. First they were slow, generated bad output, required hand-holding and compiler flags and mixtures of hand-written and generated code but in just a small number of years they almost entirely replaced writing machine code. That is what AI will do to higher level languages and knowledge workers.

Of course I am making generalisations here and there will be small niches of programming that do fundamentally require some amount of determinism or high amounts of control over what exact code is executing but as most programmers are working on completely trivial and tediously boring code I genuinely do expect most work to move into the realm of secretarial-tier work, barely qualifying as knowledge work.

People can have their head in the sand as long as they want and claim that their work is esoteric and niche enough that they're safe but my guess is those people really haven't worked alongside a team steeped in AI-first workflows and extrapolated how teams and features will be built in the future.

AeroNotix

And the people with their heads in the sand try to pretend that AI is just automating away the typing.

Luck has it that us programmers get to find an enjoyable, and high paying job. This luck cannot and should not last

Why shouldn't it last?

AeroNotix

People like you need to start to admit that code as a craft, as an engineering practice, was never really part of why you did it.

AeroNotix

I'm hugely skeptical that most of these codebases will be maintainable long-term

There will be no value or market for maintaining code written by AI. The task isn't to treat code as a managed asset but rather as a largely irrelevant incidental byproduct of role not unlike a secretary.

Maintenance in this kind of world is merely the adjustment of the parameters used to generate the code. You will not by editing code by hand. Much like you do not edit compiled executables by hand, either.

I thought I made that abundantly clear. I know that resin casting is not 3D printing.

Colloquially people will call anything that's not original plastic "3D printed".

AeroNotix

Use the back of your hobby knife to scrape away mould lines. It will get rid of the lines which are for example running vertically down the legs.

AeroNotix

"3D printing" covers a wide range of what is available out there. For example, people will call resin recasts "3D printed".

I know someone who solely buys resin recasts from China and you genuinely, genuinely cannot tell the difference once something is painted. The price is like 90% less than what GW charges for the same model. It's kind of ridiculous.

AeroNotix

Right and the strength of an aspect needs to be taken into account which subclass it is on. If Controlled Demo were on, say, Prismatic Hunter then it'd not even be a question.

AeroNotix

Overshields can trigger other things, it's not just for the raw eHP.

AeroNotix

Not obsolete, as you well know they trigger off of different things and are used in different places. Bastion is more of a hunker down and immediately get a full overshield. With an overflow into Void Overshield I'm more thinking of a 2-5% OS rather than huge chunks, not to mention that CD requires volatile detonations which force you to be aggressive.

Different playstyles.

AeroNotix

yeah been like this since the rework unfortunately

AeroNotix

Brother, it doesn't look like you need much advice! Great stuff.

AeroNotix

That's... that's actually a sick idea if you had the people around you to pull it off.

AeroNotix

Crispy. You're a natural :)

AeroNotix

Absolutely heretical but hell yeah brother!

AeroNotix

I cannot fathom how difficult the one on the right would be.

AeroNotix

As someone essentially relearning 40k from the ground up, why is this good? Asking in good faith because most comments are "this is bad" and "this is good, actually" without specifying why with concrete examples.

AeroNotix

Oh, I was gonna ask -- where do you get that armour set lol :)

AeroNotix

Can you expand on the playstyle a bit more?

I keep trying to use the block variants as the damage profiles seem interesting, along with the AOE stagger effects. Huge damage potential on bosses notwithstanding. I get creamed pretty resoundingly and I can't handle hordes like I can with fencing.

What am I likely doing wrong?

AeroNotix

There's no way they don't end up giving us Leandros' armour.

AeroNotix

Implement the will of the Emperor.

AeroNotix

It's more effort to come here to try to get accolades from your Reddit brothers than it would've been to plug in a mic and talk them through their learning.

AeroNotix

I put ~5k into D2 in like 3 years.
