I am not saying it does inference in the cloud.
I'm saying it stores data, and eventually sends that data for their models to train out in their servers.
That training is not free, it costs an obscene amount of money, and it's why they've moved to a subscription plan.
Alexandratta
I uninstall it on purpose.
Does that count?
Alexandratta
I'm really curious about this, because most people find it works poorly, or not at all.
Then some folks claim it works really well.
So I have to ask... Do you live around California, or have a similar accent?
Alexandratta
and after it understands you... It can't do anything with that.
Alexandratta
Having used them... No, no it doesn't.
Siri AI behaves just as badly as Gemini.
We Apple users, however, have a way to fix Siri AI!
First, uninstall the app...
Then go back to Siri Classic.
Disable all Apple Intelligence features.
Upgrade complete.
Siri AI never knows when to do the full LLM stuff or push to the assistant mode - half the time it doesn't even hear the words right.
Alexandratta
Not a single customer demanded AI anything.
Alexandratta
"Answers back" - whether correct answers... you'll never know until you check the device later.
Alexandratta
I've never understood folks who ask any app for info like that... it's basically pressing "I'm feeling lucky!" on the old google search and hoping it's correct.
Alexandratta
...Except there's no point in asking it any of that information, because there's at least a 20% chance it's wrong, or lies to you, or just pulls a random number out of it's hat.
ChatGPT killed a girl when she asked it for medical advice about mitigating her epilepsy medication... the parents are suing it.
Do not, under any circumstance, as a chatbot for any kind of important information. It can, and will, make mistakes and the apology it gives for screwing up doesn't help you much when you're lying on the floor, passed out.
Alexandratta
eh, Gemini will be unaffordable before it reaches that level.
It's already outstandingly expensive, and a huge loss leader for ABC.
Once they finally start having to charge what it costs to operate in an attempt to turn a profit, the app will likely be dead.
Alexandratta
And that command you had to give it renders it, as a product, useless.
I want to explain: No one, not a soul, would think to ask this or "request" this ridiculous prompt.
The failure is in the UI Design here, and the application.
These apps spent so much time pleasing rich folks with fancy things like making dinner reservations and planning a weeks worth of travel events, that they kind of forgot that normal people never have, nor would, use an app for that - let alone a voice controlled one.
I cannot wait until Gemini becomes unaffordable to normal folks, so we can finally get back to the stuff the works vs the stuff that makes line go up.
Alexandratta
That's the worst part of any AI app.
They're designed to never respond "No" - so they end up lying.
Had an ADT "Digital Agent" tell me it was shipping a part for my alarm panel... thankfully I didn't trust it, and requested a person. Nope - that's not even a thing ADT does!
Alexandratta
I had long said in the Apple forums: "If you disable Siri Classic I probably will just disable all voice command features entirely."
Thank God they kept the simple bot and didn't force everyone over to the inept Gemini infused version of Siri.
If they do this, again... I'll have to cope without a digital assistant, since they basically removed it.
Alexandratta
"It's so much easier! Just give the AI App access to the applications you want, set-up each app in the settings...."
The point of a voice command digital assistant was to remove that.
60% of phone users are never going to touch those settings - so the app is legit dead in the water as far as those users are concerned.
Alexandratta
for me it will default to Google Maps every time.
As Google Maps had no options for EVs, I long since swapped to ABRP (A Better Route Planner).
Gemini refused to chose that as a navigation app.
We also had a great time with my father's 'Gemini' where it took him 2 minutes to get directions to JFK.
On his old assistant all he did was open the navigation app (Google in this case) and speak the destination.
When he spoke the destination... Gemini decided to inform him of every plane arriving at that terminal.
We eventually managed to coax it to respond to "Navigate to JFK" - to which it took 30 seconds to "think" about it, closed the google maps app that was opened... reopened it, and finally put the destination in.
All while being annoyingly chatty.
We reverted to Google Assistant and my father disabled Gemini.
When they forced Gemini on him... he disabled all voice commands, and now has to type the addresses in.
The downgrade is so amazing on this crap.
Alexandratta
It was also amazingly "Chatty" when I had it...
Like... no. Tell me "Yes" or "No" if you can or cannot do anything.
The people who asked for "Conversational AI" never read Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and it shows.
Alexandratta
The lack of contextual awareness and the preference for Google services over your defaults is an impressive fail for a "product" that is supposed to be ready for prime time but isn't even out of Beta yet.
Did they test this AT ALL or did the AI Devs just go: "It'll figure it out, it's AI!"
Alexandratta
1000% - It's one of the reasons I left Android.
At least iOS allows you to keep "Siri Classic"
That said... Good God I miss the Android Keyboard.
Alexandratta
I'm just... How did you get Corporate to Approve the LED light strips?
Asking for a friend....
Alexandratta
I was about to say.....
Alexandratta
Mine's literally in the center of the shifter - when it's in motion if you push it into the "R" position and hold it, bam! Neutral (Nissan Aryia, EV)
It helps if people, you know, read the damn manual that comes with the car.
Alexandratta
How much was the supposed payoff that Hunter got? Like.. 10g?
Alexandratta
At this point I only do RTA to get credit for the “play 3 x arena” because I’m just top 3 and can’t crack 1/2 spots… so rather just llay 3X mystery battles for credit
Alexandratta
The concept of adding more deep conversation to the NPC text that I usually hit 'skip' on is a heck of a concept...
Feels like the same idea behind this "Conversational" crap the bots all fail at... stfu, I just want you to schedule the event for the date and time I said on my calendar - All I need is a "Successfully scheduled" or "Failed, due to [X]" - nothing else.

Did you ask AI about that lack of power saving or something?
This has been a known feature of OLEDs for a long time.
