Never meandered into an EVE Online thread?

"Reading about this game is more fun than playing it"

"This."

Or NMS:

"It's impressive that they've continued to support the game this long after launch, but the core gameplay is still boring."

(yes, I spend too much time on reddit)

Alexandur

Alrighty! Would be super easy for you to prove me wrong by spending 2 minutes on WolframAlpha, but I understand why you'd be reluctant.

Alexandur

No it isn't, WolframAlpha is more than capable of calculating in any base you ask for. It's a pre-LLM computational engine for advanced math, you can give it math problems both in plain English or using notation, I'm sure you could figure it out, give it a try

Alexandur

it is indeed related to the event, pretty cool touch

Alexandur

Verify Claude's answer with WolframAlpha

Alexandur

Woke sub

Alexandur

No, it isn't a trap, and there's nothing impossible about doing math in base 623 or whatever it was, or using different bases for different digits. Seriously, run it through WolframAlpha.

Alexandur

So you didn't read it, that makes sense. Seriously, just verify with WolframAlpha (I did) yourself, you may learn something.

Alexandur

How hard is it to just actually read the transcript I linked for you? You can verify the result using WolframAlpha (or the math tool of your choice). Have you tried that? Can you tell me what "computers cannot display characters" means, also?

Alexandur

Computers cannot display characters... this just gets better and better. Tell me more about how computers can't display characters, please

Alexandur
Alexandur

Yep. Dude was a TSA agent, literally everyone's dream job

Alexandur

No, I just misunderstood your original request, and gave it the mass/acceleration equation first, without saying anything about bases. Then, once I understood what you were really asking, I gave it all of your requirements, and it was solved. Just look at the transcript I sent you, you're plainly arguing against reality

Alexandur

Yes, because I didn't tell it to do otherwise at first. When I fed it your complicated base requirements, it handled them just fine

Alexandur

Again, demonstrably incorrect

Alexandur

Uh huh. Are you ever going to tell me why you thought there were only 3 bases

Alexandur

yes

Alexandur

Then you are suggesting that an AI that is a few months of training data on elementary books will be able to flawlessly create calculus.

No I'm not? I have no idea who you're responding to lol

Alexandur

What? I'm talking about what AI can do today, right now in October of 2026, thought that was obvious

Alexandur

No, I do, but it isn't a few years ago right now, is it? This technology is progressing insanely quickly. Can you answer my question? Why did you think only 2, 10, and 16 were the only valid bases? Those aren't even all the "common" ones

Alexandur

Okay, but even if they're term limited and retiring, what would be their motivation for doing so

Alexandur

?

Bases apart from 2, 10, and 16 exist, any value (apart from 0 and 1) can be a base, and I don't know what you mean by "adding additional modifiers for different digits" or why that would be impossible (the different bases for each digit requirement? yes, that is possible)

Alexandur

Which part of what you gave me do you believe doesn't exist?

Alexandur

What did you think was impossible again? Something about needing more than one character to represent certain numbers in a certain base? You didn't explain it very clearly and I feel like whatever it is, is stemming from some misunderstanding of how bases and/or math notation works

Alexandur

But... it is, and I've literally shown you proof of that (doing math in bases that it definitely does not have specific training data for). What more could I provide? How about all the news recently about old, unsolved math problems being solved?
