Also, I want to touch on “I just don’t want to earn a degree to work in a field I don’t know about” school teaches you that if I’m understanding correctly what you’re talking about. I went into college not knowing wtf a business analyst did but as time goes on you learn with any major what is expected of you, what industries you can work in, and how your career can grow.

yes, my career isn’t something I’m passionate about but it keeps the bills paid and gives me the time & money to pour into the things I am passionate about and that’s one of the most important things.

Well I was in your position at your point. I had just graduated high school and decided that I didn’t want to go to college. I spent my time working at a pizza place and had my family throwing around different ideas to me as well… “go to trade school” was what I heard constantly because none of my family went to college. I considered for a while but hated the idea of any schooling after a hard time in high school and thought nowhere would accept me (I had a 3.0 i don’t know why I thought that) .
That changed when at that pizza place job I’d been working at for about 7 months now, my manger said some vile shit to me and I realized if I was going to be talked to like that I’d rather it be while making more than 10 an hour.
So I signed up for cc and jumped around. I started as a graphic design major (dropped when I realized that nothing had changed from when I was 12 and I still couldn’t draw), then to architecture (got pissed when I’d cut myself one to many times with x-acto knife the night before a big project was due, then ran out of supplies to finish said project and dropped), then somewhere down the line ended up a business major (I don’t recall doing this I think my advisor got tired of seeing me tbh and just put my in the major that all people go when they have no clear idea what to do) and graduated with that. I transferred to another university and got my bachelors recently. So as time went on the path became clearer because I was doing something..
and yes most of those art majors that were in my graphic design courses probably are struggling trying to be the next best thing but there is also an upside to art and plenty of interesting fields. graphic design, art dealer, art director, illustrator, creative director, gallerists, art gallery owner/manager, forensic artist (pulled that of the internet), auctioneer.. and many more. some require portfolios and no schooling but it could be difficult to be selected over someone who was in school especially for jobs like art director/creative director especially if it’s a top school but if your art style and perspective is unique then you’ll be alright.

How do you recommend I find a sublet? Originally I was looking to get my own place and found some good ones but the income requirements are stopping me from doing so! what are some neighborhoods you’d recommend for someone in their early 20s?
Thank you for letting me know that it is possible without everything being perfect! everyone says online that you’ll be homeless within the hour of moving to New York if you don’t have 200k saved and a job offer with a 500k salary and it has made me feel like I’ll never be able to leave. I have some money saved but not an extreme amount and every job I’ve applied to in nyc has rejected me unfortunately so I’m left with the option of moving there without an opportunity as of right now. I have 3 years of restaurant experience so hopefully that can hold me a float until I find something 😅

You moved there when you were 22 around the age I am now! I currently live in Florida and navigating life here is hard especially in terms of friendships and relationships. When you first moved did you have any connections that made the transition easy? did you experience difficulties in terms of making friends/meeting people? I know no one there and this has caused me an extreme amount of anxiety.
Additionally, I know the job market has changed drastically but do you have any advice that could help me navigate the job market in nyc? In Florida in most places there is a unwillingness to help if you aren’t Hispanic/white/jewish unfortunately and is one of the reasons why I want to move to NYC because of its diversity and while the worry will always be there about whether racism/bias is affecting my prospects/growth in my career I think It wouldn’t be at the forefront for me in nyc and that it will be more focus on my skills/what I have to offer. in your experience do you find this true? have you had experiences where you felt you were denied an opportunity because of racism/bias in nyc?
Lastly, it’s known that nyc is very expensive which I’m not new to living in Miami and all but I’m curious, what is a realistic amount of money do you think is needed for moving there and sustaining myself during the first 3 months while job searching if I were not to secure a position before relocating?

I’ve had one so far and am currently working towards another! I was a floral designer while in school based in Florida. I started by reading, learning the different techniques, watching people who were an inspiration to me and then once I felt ready branched off to do my own thing. It was great for a bit and helped pay for bills especially on huge holidays like Mother’s Day/valentines day. I closed it in pursuit of my current business venture which is in business consulting. I just graduated with a degree in business analytics which really laid the foundation for owning my own and providing insights for other small - medium size businesses. It’s going well so far.. I’m doing the small stepping stones right now. I scored a position as an analyst for a non-profit and am in talks with a company’s founder on helping them out part time. Hopefully this could lead to them being good reference for me when I launch. :)

Oh absolutely not! that man is a danger to your nephew and to children in general. to tell a child that he would get in trouble if he spoke up about his abuse is enough for me to believe that he will go further! I’m so glad that your nephew opened up to you and told you the truth of what goes on. it takes children sometimes years to speak up about things that happen to them. Please it breaks my heart to read that this grown man instilled in him that if he ever said anything he would get in trouble. in my eyes if he’s willing to tell a child that he would get in trouble then he’s willing to tell a child that no one would believe them. I’m sorry if I’m coming off too strong but I’ve heard so many stories of young children having similar situations/ heard my bosses stories of their abuse in their childhood even my own family and so when I see a situation like this one that could be helped before it gets worse I feel the need to share the reality :(

you need to advocate for your nephew! I work with children and scenarios like this if not addressed immediately will make your nephew think that it’s okay for something like that to be done to him and not speak up if something more is going on. The boyfriend hitting him, and then speaking on your nephews behalf are signs to me a person who would go further behind closed doors and if I were to witness this as someone who works with children I would be on the phone within seconds! it makes me feel sick that your nephew nodded although you knew something was wrong because it means he doesn’t feel safe/feels that the boyfriend would harm him or retaliate. You need to bring this up to your sister immediately and if she is allowing this to happen then shame on her sorry to say. If it were me I wouldn’t care how much I love my sister if she’s allowing mistreatment of her child I’m doing everything in my power to get my nephew out of her home.

disgusting child abuse is everyones business.

UPDATE: thank you all for the responses and help in a time of uncertainty for me. I read all the comments and have done what feels right to me which was to end the friendship. I sent her a text letting her know (which looking back she didn’t deserve but I didn’t want her to keep texting) that I could not see our friendship moving forward to which she responded: “Thank you. I wish it didn’t have to sit that way I would rather our friendship not be based on politics. But I wish you luck and if you ever want to talk in person I would.” I did not respond and decided instead to block her. Thank you all for your input! Stay blessed xo

I thought about this earlier today!
Alive_Draw_9504
I did, it hurts because I’m back to being friendless but it will all work itself out in due time I hope. thanks for the advice.
Alive_Draw_9504
This is my last semester so I think the ship has sailed for more friendships and even so since I live in Florida it is likely trying to pursue friendships will probably put me right back here lol! Yes I’m glad I found out early it kept coming to my mind before I seen her repost but I tossed the thought away since her boyfriend is Puerto Rican as well as her other best friend those two things had me fooled
Alive_Draw_9504
Usually it does for me as well however I’m super closed off when to comes to meeting friends/being friends with someone due to trauma from the past and not having friends for a long time so I have to be pushed a little bit otherwise or ill just be alone

No not in UK or Europe I just have made a habit of using the more formal term I guess.. we are both in the US.
That’s what it looks like I don’t know them well enough unfortunately to know for sure! I read attached 3 times last year it was very insightful and made me feel like I’m not so crazy after all. I am anxious and am constantly working on it. :/ thank you
