I found it a useful/interesting experience the first time around, does get old after the third time though. (Tesco, not M&S, they do something similar.)

Can't you do some minimal self employment (doesn't even have to be profitable) and pay the £189.80/year for class 2 NIC?

I guess I'm the only one who has absolutely no interest in houses. Very happy with my flat, if I ever do upgrade it would only be to move to a more central flat.

I value the view very highly, and you can't have a house on the 14th floor 😄

Wise is pretty good, have used it for similar sums. Their rates are competitive and I've always liked the fact that they're extremely clear about how they make money.

I hate that I have to wait until the last minute to do my self assessment just because I don't know if it was £3 or £5 ERI this year until Vanguard release their figures...

Almoturg

At least you can ignore the cost basis increases given that ERI is negligible.

Depends on the team. I had a great experience at Deliveroo so it's definitely not all bad, but you need to figure out who you'll be working with.

Ask the recruiter to set up some calls with ICs in your prospective team after you get the offer and just ask them about WLB, oncall, etc.

Just check levels.fyi or Glassdoor. If you can't find salaries there it's probably not worth applying to anyway.

There are no standards, so it's up to your own interpretation. For me I felt comfortable calling myself a physicist after I had my first published paper (~start of PhD, publishing results of the masters).

The next question is can I still call myself a physicist after being in industry (tech) for 7 years 😅

Not OP, but I mainly got it for sleep tracking. I tried sleeping with a Fitbit but just couldn't get used to it.

Do it, you're way overdue a move after 4 years with no meaningful progression. And it's not just about the immediate pay bump, it sounds like the new job would also look way better to future recruiters so the next move will be even better (+ snowflake is a joy to work with).

Both times I've moved jobs it's been a bit sad (great culture in the DS department for the first one, and a really great team the second). But I still keep in contact with people and you never know where you'll see them again. And moving after 2+ years is completely normal, there really shouldn't be any hard feelings.

Almoturg

Amazing, I was just about to suggest that and thought it was probably a bit out there compared to what other people would come up with 😅

Saphroneth is definitely the right vibe.

Monzo, with extra to link credit card accounts. Works great for tracking spending categories day to day.

One thing I don't like is that transactions from connected accounts are only retained for some time (2 years?), so the historical view isn't always accurate. I switch it to include the credit card statement payments when that happens so at least the totals are correct.

Because without the mindless part it looks like 2h a day of work, which companies won't accept. So you have to do more high level analysis which means either fewer engineers or doing more stuff overall.

Either way I'd say it's a lot more stressful. There is value in having a balance of tasks that demand different kinds of engagement, you can't be 100% always.

I left my last job a couple of weeks before they had the annual Christmas party there, still a bit sad about it...

Almoturg

I wouldn't call it chill. Nobody cares when people turn up to the office or how long you work, but at the end of the half if your impact is in the bottom 10% of the performance ranking you're gone. (And that's if there's no layoff, which is rare.)

Also, expecting people to document stuff during an active incident is just not realistic. What you need is a strong culture of followups & reviews after the incident which take precedence over normal project work.

Almoturg

Putting "I'm a very slow reader" on your CV is definitely a choice...

Cheese fondue (I love the Emmi Fondü ready made), Baguette and apples to dunk, and a nice Gewürztraminer white wine.

Lovely taste, feels quite fancy but takes like 15min to prepare.

>£200k in liquid TC for senior is not crap.

Funny coincidence, just a month ago Sebastian Gurriaran and, independently, Jonathan Luk & Jan Sbierski proved that the situation in this picture doesn't happen in reality. They showed that the interior Cauchy horizon of Kerr is (non-linearly) unstable, so the geodesic would terminate once it hits the r=r- boundary for any real black hole.
