Astronomer here! Big news- I am a winner this year for the Wendy and Eric Schmidt Awards for Excellence in Science Communications, in large part for my posts on Reddit! (i.redd.it) [image/gif]

One thing I don’t get about cutting that program is my understanding is the history MA is competitive, and that students pay to do it. How much is the college really saving by getting rid of that one?

Andromeda321

I would be very curious to see just how much is saved by cutting these tiny humanities PhD programs over just having them under one umbrella for admin reasons.

Thank you! :)

I heard about this a few years ago when a student told me their sibling had CF in the same tone as you might if one had, say, diabetes (like, a complicated life but you still live one). I’m old enough to remember a kid in my class dying from it and marveled.

Andromeda321

Yes actually! Posted videos of my class on the solar system last year if you’re interested! link

Andromeda321

Well if you invite me, sure. :)

Andromeda321

Are you going for a PhD? Not sure if it’s the same in Germany but my program in NL allowed you to loan a nominal amount out of future salary to cover things like your visa.

Check out /r/Andromeda321!

Andromeda321

Well I’m definitely no longer in my 20s so this is nice to hear!

Andromeda321

I am! I do! Great students and you can’t beat the scenery.

Andromeda321

Thank you! You guys are too kind!

Oh trust me I get into weird arguments like anyone else (usually at 2am when feeding my babies and am sleep deprived and shouldn’t be posting). Thankfully usually no one notices those though. 😂

Andromeda321

I also loved Bradbury but those authors are def on the “soft” side of the sci-fi spectrum.

Andromeda321

Thank you! You guys are too kind. :)

When I was in high school I LOVED Arthur C Clarke and Asimov, who arguably were the original writers in sci-fi realism. Clarke especially was a master of short stories so your kid can pick up a “best of short stories” volume by him and see if any scratch that itch.

Also while it’s def fiction, I feel Ender’s Game is worth a mention due to age. There’s a lot of “figure out how the battle room works with physics” type stuff which makes it more “hard sci-fi” than HHG or Wrinkle in Time, which are def more “soft sci-fi.”

Ah yes my poor YouTube channel. It was fun! I just don’t have time for it- maybe once I’m teaching again…

Andromeda321

Ah wow, that was a cool venue! I’m touched you remember it!

Andromeda321

Awww that’s so awesome. Good luck with the classes! And thanks!

Andromeda321

Yes, but it’s worth noting we were already using AI before it was cool. You don’t think astronomers were planning to sort through the 2 million new transients discovered each year from Rubin Observatory by hand, were you? :)

Andromeda321

Well thank you. To be clear that joke is a little tongue in cheek- if I didn’t think what I did was important I wouldn’t be doing it!

(I do spend waaaaay more time silently scrolling random subs than you guys probably think though!)

Thank you! I didn’t make the image myself, turns out a communications award has a great comms team, but it’s nice to see what fancy other people think of your efforts. :)
