It's the pointy haired Dilbert boss when he says anything he doesn't understand is easy. In the realm of development, a web-based searchable database ain't exactly groundbreaking and making it didn't require too many tools, but since he didn't have his hands on it, he doesn't realize the real difficulty of all the underlying structure he relies on.

ApesAmongUs

What they "want" is a rule that can be applied to do whatever they wanted to do before the rule existed and offer them plausible deniability.

ApesAmongUs

I don't think I'm doing anything wrong, but Pharmachologist Devotion seems to not be giving the Medicine Expert.

ApesAmongUs

Sounds like the person who wrote the heritage didn't really know the rules.

ApesAmongUs

(in response to the edit comment)I added that one because it's explicitly called a trait that your speed can have in the Hover Ad heritage - "Your land Speed gains the hover trait"

ApesAmongUs

You don't think a level 8 class feat to quick draw once a day is worth it?

ApesAmongUs

A Brig as as long term as it takes to get to an area where the authorities are. If you're months out, the brig has to hold them for months. The prison option takes them from wherever you pick them up to wherever you drop them off. The time they are held is functionally the same minus a day or two to give them time to commit the infraction that gets them in the Brig.

The ships described are ships that can be manned by 6 people, we aren't talking holding them for years in a space station. Is it your position that the option given under "passenger quarters" on the section where no ship requires more than 6 crew members is actually meant to model a long term storage facility?

And when it explicitly lists the contents of the prison quarters as "Prison: Secure cells are sparsely furnished with a bench, bed, and lavatory behind a privacy screen. Each cell is protected by an elite lock (Player Core 240) biometrically keyed to the starship’s registered crew members. A creature locked inside a cell in the prison quarters gains the observed and restrained conditions", can you tell me what part of that differs from what would be required in a brig?

ApesAmongUs

Yet it is presented as an option for player ships, all of which max out needing at most 6 crew and the prison option includes nothing that would be required for what you are describing.

And no. Travel times in Starfinder take several days to go anywhere that requires a drift drive or inside a solar system if you're not drifting. A week for following a drift lane. Half a month for the Vast. You aren't just chaining someone up in a corner.

ApesAmongUs

Except they included "prison" as an option and the description is a brig. It has no features that would not be a necessary part of a brig. If you can just make a brig willy-nilly, then why is the prison option there?

ApesAmongUs

They are realistic gameplay. The character that excels in a situation should get to shine. It's only "bad" to shift focus among players and characters if some of the players are attention hogs who cannot sit quietly for 5 minutes to allow someone else to shine.

ApesAmongUs

The moment you say the passenger quarters hold infinity people and you can't divide infinity in half, then you've given up on abstraction and just started in on arbitrary.

ApesAmongUs

And in a social interaction the face tends to be doing most of the talking and rolling. And in a computer hacking segment, the computer guy tends to be doing the deciding and rolling. The fact that everyone has anything to do at all is already more egalitarian than anything except basic combat.

ApesAmongUs

"If I disabled a car by removing the spark plugs, it would no longer be useful for driving away."

It would be way more useful for driving away than a brick outhouse would be. It's still 90% there. The wheels still work. There's lots of glass to break. Without some major structural modifications it's a bad choice.

The purpose of putting a brig in an escape pod in a RPG is to give the PC locked in there a chance to show off how "cool" he is by doing a little jury rigging and then blasting off while giving the dumb bad guys the finger from the window of the escape pod.

That's a narrative choice (a lazy one, but whatever), not something to be built into the rules.

ApesAmongUs

Not just luxury. Basic is an option as well and it also excludes both prison and luxury. Basic takes up no space on its own, but somehow still prevents selecting either of the other two options. Also Space is defined in terms of expansion bays. You have 4 space options and passenger quarters (of the prisoner and luxury type) takes up 1 of the 4. So picking one of luxury or prison takes up 1/4 of the available space, but it's too much space and blocks out the other option that also takes up only 1 of 4. That makes no sense. I haven't been in primary school in a very long time, but I'm pretty sure that with both, we'd still have half our space left.

BTW, did you just drop original claim that prison isn't a type like the others? I know you aren't the person who made that claim originally, but since we are still underneath that in the thread, it feels a bit like goalpost shifting.

ApesAmongUs

That is copy and pasted directly from the Tech Core description of Passenger Quarters: Prison. That is the entirety of the entry. That's all you get with your hypothetical "prison transport". It's a brig.

EDIT: I just want to add that that you are responding as part of a sub-thread about me not "understanding the text" and you haven't read the text.

ApesAmongUs

That's all you get with the "prison" option as well.

"Secure cells are sparsely furnished with a bench, bed, and lavatory behind a privacy screen. Each cell is protected by an elite lock (Player Core 240) biometrically keyed to the starship’s registered crew members. A creature locked inside a cell in the prison quarters gains the observed and restrained conditions."

ApesAmongUs

"I am not going to argue with you."

Because you don't have an argument. The idea of using an escape pod as a brig is absurd and you know it's absurd, but for some reason you can't just say that.

ApesAmongUs

A "closet" that is detachable and positioned within the ship to make detaching and deploying as fast and easy as possible in an emergency situation, which also has the infrastructure to support life if detached from the ship. So, not really like a closet at all.

ApesAmongUs

The word "escape" is right there in the name.

ApesAmongUs

You get the "obvious problem" I'm talking about, right? On a list of places on a ship that would serve the function of containing someone we want contained, "escape pod" comes at the absolute bottom. That's like a choice Elmer Fudd would make to catch Bugs Bunny. It has to be a joke to show that the crew of the ship are morons. After doing that, did they read the prisoner bad poetry?

ApesAmongUs

I hope that caused the exact problem that it obviously would cause.

ApesAmongUs

Well, they mention "types" and then list Basic, Prison, and Luxury using the exact same header bolding and in that order. So, if the intended "understanding" is that 1 and 3 are the types and 2 is something totally different, then ... seriously, is that your actual claim? No, really, is that what you are saying that 9 people agreed with?

ApesAmongUs

Since they use a limited resource and all quarters are apparently infinite, there would be no reason to ever have more than one of a type installed. So, really, they could just say nothing.
