This is also how Tolkien (a staunch Catholic) worked in big-G divine into LOTR, like Bilbo finding the One Ring by accident or tripping Gollum. Those situations were providence manifesting small "adjustments" of circumstance.

I originally got into teaching as a way to pay the bills prior to finishing my PhD as an adjunct instructor. That led into getting my first permanent (NTT) position after completing my degree and teaching/education remains a large component of my current position. I like students, I like teaching, I have a naturally loud voice and can talk at length about most topics easily. So it made sense. It really wasn't my goal, but you leverage the experience and career opportunities that present themselves to you.

Mine had friends, family, the committee, and some errant faculty and students. Whole gaggle in the room. This should be fine and normal, I don't know what's up with your chair, but I'd maybe ask around with other graduate students or another committee member if you're concerned. It should be fine. I recommend bringing coffee and donuts for the committee too.  Note that you likely have a public and private exam portion.

For sure.  Hiring teams work normal business hours and likely have other duties going on. There's a window, yes, of an appropriately timely response, but I don't think I've ever heard of anyone ranking interviewees by scheduling time. That sounds way too in the weeds or 4D chess stuff that only insane people with too much time do.

In my experience talking to faculty: research (and funding ability) for most TT positions is indeed king, however, nobody wants to "train" an incoming Assistant Professor, deal with avoidable course problems, or heaven-forbid needing to take over a course from the newbie. Therefore, at least some instructor-of-record experience is preferred even at research heavy R1 institutes.

(Like, excuse the random information but as a huge fan of Queen, Brian May talks about the ups and downs with his father. One of the most successful rockstars and scientists in our lifetime and his Dad was disgusted with him because he dropped out of university to be a rockstar, and he lived in sin with his girlfriend. When he posts about his Dad, he's still sad about their rift and isn't sure his Dad would be proud of him, and he's in his 70s)

Old comment, but I just wanted to chime in that May dedicated his 2008 PhD thesis to his dad with "This was your dream too, Dad." Child-parent relationships are certainly complicated.

OpenAlex

Precisely, it was OpenAlex that I felt compelled to sign up for and clean out. Unfortunately, I have an uncommon name yet another researcher with the same name was also in my field hence these databases almost inevitably merges us.

AsAChemicalEngineer

Sigh. Another database that I got to sign up for and clean up my author profile on. I wish these places more strictly adhered to ORCID when deciding the merge people or not.

AsAChemicalEngineer

I love both, but Part 1 is just magical. It really transported me to another world in a way few films manage.

AsAChemicalEngineer

Exactly. She calls it as “investing” in my career and I will thank her later.

Fuck that. Seriously. Publish in a subscription journal instead if your PI or department won't fork over the cash. Asking a graduate student to pay APCs out of pocket is absolutely unacceptable behavior.

AsAChemicalEngineer

DoS is generally an advocate for students' best interest rather than an office "out to get you" or anything. Just take the meeting, be honest, and treat the event like a life lesson to tone down the partying lest you impact your health or future prospects.

AsAChemicalEngineer

That's how I manage. I'm really close to the Decatur MARTA and commute with it to work in Midtown 4-5 days a week. There's some difficulties regarding grocery coverage, but you can manage with some careful planning.

AsAChemicalEngineer

This is kinda my emotional state as well. I just wanted stability, the ability to do research basically "part time" and not really depend too deeply on how my work is received. I find it interesting and personally rewarding and that's okay.

AsAChemicalEngineer

This is amazing work OP. Truly breathtaking. When you get the chance, I'd love to see a writeup of your analysis (like posted in the astrobin description maybe).

AsAChemicalEngineer

I was new, never wrote a paper before.

Tbh, this is still a shared blunder unless he specifically trained you on proper submission etiquette. There's lots of little rules you got to learn about academic publishing and you don't just find out via magic, you got to be told these things. This was partly his responsibility to make sure you understood the rules.

AsAChemicalEngineer

I thought your write up was lovely and quiet thoughtful even though I have no prior understanding of unit fractions. Just as a curious reader, I feel like I at least understood the broad picture and certain technical steps without too much friction.

AsAChemicalEngineer

The entire chair looks like a single block of emerald too from the pic. And the throne room itself is designed to basically psychologically break you and convince you of your insignificance and powerlessness in simply the journey from walking from the entrance to before the chair. Great stuff.

AsAChemicalEngineer

Carroll is legit even though most physicists don't concern themselves with interpretations of QM anymore. I also really like his general relativity textbook and class notes.

I bought a Lenovo 4k Yoga 9i touchscreen foldable laptop (15 in) in 2020 for your price range and it's still my go-to computer for work. I got a decent deal at Best Buy too. All my IT friends prefer Lenovo computers for work because they've had less troubleshooting problems with them on average.

I think Sagan will probably hold a pretty long cultural memory in scientific circles because of his work on planetary science and space probe missions. And his (and others) work on Voyager might be among the longest lasting works of humans.

AsAChemicalEngineer

I love the little details like the shading under the labels. Very good work.

AsAChemicalEngineer

Yeah, I'm not arguing with your factual points. "Woman taken into adultery" is certainly a late addition, though potentially based on a legit oral tradition or even originally from Luke back when stuff was more fluid.

I just wanted to say that often I see arguments framed in ways that far better map to how conservative Evangelical Protestants engage with the text or at least the loud online variety. To them, original authorship is directly tied to legitimacy, inspiration and inerrancy, which just isn't the case for others.

While an evangelical might fight "tooth and nail" to patch up a contradiction (such as Judas dying in two ways) with incredible feats of mental gymnastics, most Christians (at least the ones who think about this stuff) probably just shrug their shoulders as either accepting the tension, or say the differences aren't relevant to the core message of salvation.  Weirdly, I think there's an underlying logical kinship between the Evangelical approach and many atheists, as both groups are interested in a materialist capital "T" Truth, but both responding to biblical flaws far differently.
