I had a bad experience with Expedia when I flew into Atlanta and went to pick up my rental car. They were all out and couldn’t refund me. Expedia said they couldn’t verify that there weren’t any cars. I ended up eating the cost and having to go to a different car rental agency and of course the last minute counter price was crazy. That was the last time I used a third party for any travel.

Yes and it’s Expedia’s responsibility to refund you. Theirs and theirs alone. The hotel is out of the loop and in no way responsible for refunding you. That’s how third party transactions work.

Right. So Expedia should refund you. Then Expedia and the Hotel can follow whatever agreements they have regarding cancellations and sort that out themselves. Expedia bought those rooms on a discount and then sold to you for a profit. The hotel made the sale to Expedia, not to you. Expedia is the entity responsible for reimbursing you but likely they have language built into the purchase agreement that limits reimbursement. Lesson is to always book direct.

You paid Expedia. Expedia needs to refund you not the hotel.
