You can absolutely minimize it, especially for someone untrained. It called a body recomp.

A very small calorie surplus of 100-200 calories a day, 0.7 - 1 gram/lb protein, 7-9 hours of sleep, and training with progressive overload 3-4 days a week and she'll put on loads of muscle with minimal fat gain for 6+ months easily. (Anecdotally, I have personally done this with great results, but there's loads of research to back it up as well.)

At a certain point she'll have to up the calories, and accept some fat increase to see more gains, but beginner gains are real. Beginners can see gains even on a defecit if they're overweight.

It typically has to be within 3 scores, or with the potential tying run on deck.

But you can also get a save if you pitch the final 3 innings of a game without giving up the lead regardless of the score difference. That's how Wes Littleton got the save that game despite entering with a score of 11-3 (that ballooned to 30-3.)
