Hi, I Master hip hop records and am more than happy to set up a collaborative relationship to mentor the mixes before mastering. I understand the place you’re at. DM for more info 😊

I think a good exercise is prioritizing the most important aspects of the mix first, regardless of genre. In this case, perhaps the synth bass deserves the first pick of frequencies in the masking battle. I would begin the mix with exclusively working on let’s say the kick, synth bass, and vocals. Just make sure that synth bass sounds the best it can given the context without the distraction of other instruments. Then, once happy, bring in the other instruments and carve them to sit around that 3-element base mix. Of course you can always make small adjustments to the bass afterwards as the mix evolves, but you will have already got it to a good place.

Maybe you don’t want to normalize because you like the level of one mic? If so, you can normalize both mics to any loudness target you want (maybe LUFS for perceptual loudness), and then manually adjust the gain of both together until that reference mic is back to zero. The difference in gain will stay on mic 2’s clip.

You could do that on two recorded clips and be done, or if you really want it recorded equally through your pre-amps, then do the above with test recordings, note the final dB change needed to mic 2, adjust its preamp accordingly, then re-test with a new clip, and repeat until they seem consistently normalized straight from the preamp, at which point you’re ready to record at preamp-matched levels.

45 minutes on. 15+ minutes off (different room/outside/relax and reset). Once you go past an hour of work, it’s less likely your ears are in the right place.

Just taking a quick walk and doing something else can reset your ears nicely.

Works fine for me. That being said I tend to use it on track prep sessions and then bounce/render the tuning into a new track for the mixing session, so I rarely need to re-use the ARA.

I have used it in some large mix sessions to do touch ups and have not had an issue yet (knocks on wood).

I use the latest version of reaper on Windows 10, and I did see that 7.34 came with some ARA related updates.

IF you can hear the sub frequencies with your monitoring system, then try soloing the 20-80 Hz range and play around with it.

You’ll find that some music responds well to a cut up at around 38Hz, some at around 20Hz, and some without a HPF at all. Then, you’ve got the practice and can use your ears to decide when it’s appropriate in the future.

There is no rule. But for sure you should be able to hear the change if you decide it is needed.

It’s a relatively common move by mastering engineers at the top level to clean up the sub when it is too… woofy (source: taken the Mastering course at Metropolis Mastering Studio).

I have Audeze headphones and found Realphones2 works perfectly for me. It’s basically the same thing as VSX that is compatible with other headphones and tailors it’s EQ curves depending on headphone model.

BenjiCooper

Do it

Thank you! 🙏🏼

I sure do miss the old days, when I could strike a small stick on the side of a box to make fire…

I have had the 1273 for a few weeks now since preordering it. It’s wonderful. I use Stam 1073 clones at another studio and this definitely works the same magic. Doing a blind LUFS-matched shootout between this, my modded ART PRO MPA II tube unit and a clean DAC preamp, I concluded that the thickness of tone/character added to the vocals is very much worth the affordable investment. Brings the best out of my Stam U87 microphone.

I currently use a combination of the old school Faderport for riding faders and stop start stuff, and a Behringer X-touch compact which I use completely for custom midi commands, each button with a little sticker for its function in bank A (one color) and bank B (another color) as I assign functions. Practically, that means opening my template bus plug-in chains, mapping to EQ and channel strip knobs when open, and easily controlling MetricAB for references and monitor filtering to hone in on frequency areas. Feel free to DM if you want more info on any of that.

You are indeed wrong about automation. You’ll want to master the two sections separately and automate the crossover until it sounds right. Whether that’s just a limiters gain or all the way to a different chain of gear if it sounds right that way. Source: education at Metropolis Studios.

Try Waves IR or any other impulse response libraries with well recorded room impulses. UAD Sound City Studios does the same thing more or less, reverb with an option to emulate re-micing too.

BenjiCooper

Is it leaking? My 2024 is in the shop right now for a coolant leak and someone else recently also had the same issue. Thermal regulator pump leak or something…

BenjiCooper

No idea but dropped it off last Thursday and they haven’t looked at it yet… busy places I guess. Frustrating but I’d rather the free fix than paying another mechanic to do it. This is in the eastern US.

BenjiCooper

Exactly the same issue here on mine. Currently at the service center. Better be warranty covered 😁

BenjiCooper

I would love to know if you fix it! 2024 Elantra and definitely have the same issue as you, compared to my Honda experience and even a smooth rental Kona recently (a 2021?).

BenjiCooper

I restored a watch band but it is missing part of the clasp. What do I need to buy to fix this? It’s a half inch wide band. Thanks

‘24 Elantra here — can confirm I noticed the same problem. At city speeds with a gap of 1, it will seemingly ignore cars in front and career into them too fast until it brakes suddenly. Don’t feel safe using it. Using a larger gap is too conservative to drive in city traffic.

Have driven a ‘24 Honda accord which is miles ahead with smoothness and usability.

That being said, driving the Hyundai on the highway with a larger gap on the ACC, it feels smooth.

Best of luck experimenting!

I didn’t do any LUA scripting before having ChatGPT do these time savers for me. The worst part was just telling it when it hallucinated lines of code that brought errors, until it fixed them.

Once that’s done, it’s very satisfying to know you have made yourself a new tool to keep your future focus on the fun bits of engineering 😊

BenjiCooper

For sure, here are a couple! They’re pretty administrative. I think of ChatGPT as a big time saver for anything finicky that takes my mind off mixing.

  • Automation lane project prep: My template has like 50 automation lanes across the project, and I like to mix using these lanes with different values at different parts of the songs. For example, vocal send volumes to various FX auxes are different for a chorus than a bridge. So, I only need to add flat automation points transitioning between sections on ONE lane, according to section markers. ChatGPT wrote me a script button which copies these automation points to ALL lanes visible. This prep saves me loads of clicking to be able to jump straight to mixing by feel, section by section with my template, instead of adding points on every lane I use.

  • Switching monitoring settings: before my current Trinnov setup, I would use various monitoring FX like sonarworks profiles for various speaker outputs. ChatGPT took seconds to write me scripts so I could have a midi button switch these settings instantly without taking my mind off the mix. For example, I am listening on headphones but want my mains, so I press the “mains” button on my midi controller. It cycles through turning off any un needed monitoring plugins (like headphone correction or room simulation) and leaves me with the sonarworks reference setup appropriate for the mains.

Reascript 🤝 chatGPT

Genius 🙏🏼

BenjiCooper

Just started using Trinnov and it’s miles and miles ahead of sonarworks, if you have the budget to invest. Corrects for phase by frequency amongst other factors, as well as EQ.
