Who cares? People who don't want to upgrade can keep using -std=c++23.

BodybuilderKnown5460

Yes. For some reason the return-by-value bros never mention this. Until c++ fixes this, returning a heap allocated object by value will remain an anti-pattern.

BodybuilderKnown5460

If you use an out parameter, the caller can re-use the same buffer over and over. If you return by value, you're always going to get at least one heap allocation even with RVO.

BodybuilderKnown5460

The problem is that checking the assembly only proves that your specific example got optimized. If the standard doesn't guarantee it, you cannot rely on it.

My power has been out at least a dozen times in 2025. Almost all of those were during still, quite weather. Xcel sucks, plain and simple.

Julia burned too many people with a decade+ of TTFP problems, and more generally just JIT time writ large. Julia just occupies this a very niche space where to make it worth using, you need to either be willing to live inside a notebook or have large enough computation that the JIT time is amortized away. But then when you want to use the same tool for a small one off analysis or plot, you're sitting on your hands waiting on the JIT.

Is TTFP still an issue now? I have no idea. But I re-tried julia too many times in the past after being told "it's much better now", just to find it out still sucked.

Nothing about the wage carpenters make is indicative of a labor shortage.

BodybuilderKnown5460

Fuck you.

BodybuilderKnown5460

That's mostly me, but I don't eat out either. Mostly, I eat a lot of snacks, nuts, fruit, lunch meat and other stuff that you don't have to cook. I cook a proper meal for dinner maybe once a month if that. I cook breakfast sometimes but often I skip breakfast or have yogurt.

Bro, he's proud of you and wants to pass on part of his legacy to you. Allow him that honor.

25-30 an hour was good money 15 years ago. It's not anymore. That's an entry level wage. You can make that stocking shelves. And you want people to travel that much? Double it.

BodybuilderKnown5460

Mine already dropped about 60k on this years recent valuation.

They've been working on the same 1/2 mile of 30th st for like 5 years. It was just fine before. They are wasting both our tax dollars and our time.

BodybuilderKnown5460

The dependency graph of even the simplest rust package is a total disaster. The npm model has no place in a systems language.

BodybuilderKnown5460

Nothing really. The deadlines are fake. The fires are mostly fake and their severity overblown.

BodybuilderKnown5460

Rust? They screwed up dependency management so bad it's a joke.

BodybuilderKnown5460

Agreed. RVO is too complex to rely on. I also dislike that RVO doesn't avoid heap allocations, e.g., in a std::vector. It's often a lot more efficient to use an out param in those cases, but the RVO advocates don't want you to know that.

  1. An enum is not restricted to the values the enum declaration defines
  2. An enum can't be used as an array index without a cast
  3. Too many ways to initialize an object.
    1. The most vexing parse.
  4. It's not a compile error to return a reference to a temporary object.
  5. RVO is unreliable.
  6. Too much code is automagically generated. E.g., implicitly generated constructors and assignment operators and vtables.
  7. An unwillingness to break the abi because we let people who can't/won't recompile their code hold the language hostage.
BodybuilderKnown5460

This is the kind of can-do attitude management is looking for

They dropped my salary to a normal wage, I'd quit tomorrow.

BodybuilderKnown5460

This is my suspicion as well.

Around Boulder, the power has become extremely unreliable. It goes out for several hours at a time multiple times per month. This often happens in good weather with little wind. If you work from home, $7k for reliable power is starting to sound like a good deal.
