I've been using wholphin for a couple of months now on one of my shields and it's honestly fantastic, polished beyond belief.

I got stuck in a similar way, I have an HSBC credit card only.... I'm trying to switch a barclays account to them but i'm in a loop, click on current accounts, it takes me out of the app to their page click on accounts and it takes me to playstore to "open" the app and then around in circles i go.... forever

there are some rumours from devs that 3 and below has a method to dump the consoles keys, weather that's ever released or not who knows

but if you just want games and fun, then 4.03 is a good place to be.... most games are backported now
