That was my guess too. This happens with other animals sometimes too.

As an extreme example, this one pupper lost an ear very young, and they thought the mother might have accidentally bitten it off when cleaning the puppy off. The remaining ear then migrated to the top of her head after surgery, giving her the appearance of a unicorn:
