I feel like it's mostly when you simply can't run C, or when you're dealing with a niche architecture that has a limited C toolchain.
CelDaemon
eBPF is giving the anticheat direct access to the kernel, there's not much you can do at that point.
CelDaemon
Having a kernel module is not a prerequisite to being malware. Don't encourage this stuff, it will ruin everything.
CelDaemon
"Free/libre and open source software". FLOSS.
But yes I do think GPL is a preferable license, though this is not the way to talk about that.
CelDaemon
Slop and ARR, I'm tired of this crap
CelDaemon
Not really, the GPL is one of the major reasons we still have open software at all.
CelDaemon
That's not true. Glibc has a linking exception, you're allowed to link to it without being at risk of violating the GPL. Using a shared library also counts as linking, so without the exception you'd have to abide by the GPL, static linking or not.
CelDaemon
These comments are making me lose hope in humanity.
CelDaemon
Close enough, welcome back hololens
CelDaemon
eBPF is not sandboxed. It is verified, this doesn't mean it's not extremely powerful.
CelDaemon
"voting with your wallet" doesn't really work if there aren't any good options anymore. Also, many people simply aren't even aware of the tradeoff they are making in the first place. I think it's worth informing them (and not encouraging bad behaviour by companies in the first place).
CelDaemon
It's not really open source, just in a format that's easier to reverse engineer because it has to go through the verifier.
CelDaemon
The difference is in who owns the device. In enterprise, it's not a consumer that has to deal with their stuff being locked down. The company is the user.
For consumer devices however, none of that applies, and no company should have the right to decide anything about the device they do not own.
CelDaemon
Absolutely, it's just a very silly thing to do. I don't think distros should be catering to that. In the end it's the user's choice, but doing this also very much risks user freedom in the future.
CelDaemon
I just explained how it doesn't work like that. This kind of thing is infectious.
CelDaemon
They will not. eBPF, even with the verifier, does still run in kernel space. eBPF has hooks for pretty much anything at this point, it can be incredibly intrusive. Also, the fact that epic can decide what an "unaltered" kernel looks like is just plain silly. The user is the only one who should be able to decide that.
CelDaemon
Transparency and choice come as a part of user freedom. Epic having control over which kernels do and do not get accepted already removes a lot of choice from the user, which I find unacceptable. I am concerned about the rippling effects this may have if normalised. It's not unlikely that many games which were working perfectly fine on v1 will be moving to V2. Maybe it won't even stay in the games industry after the precedent has been set.
CelDaemon
Not true, you're acting like these developments do not impact the perception of other developers. It is not a good thing to widen the potential userbase if the reason to use Linux gets removed in the process. Linux isn't special just because it's Linux, it's special because of the user freedom it provides.
CelDaemon
I will not use a kernel I do not have complete control over, hell no. This is Linux. Anytime you can't modify something and use it in any way you see fit, there is a problem.
CelDaemon
Honestly, the solution for Linux would be to not have this in the first place. Putting the entire ecosystem at risk and letting some random company control your system is not worth it just to play a few games.
CelDaemon
Mostly the fact they require a signed kernel, signed kernel modules, remote attestation, kernel lockdown mode, disallow kexec, require secure boot, and abuse eBPF.
CelDaemon
Not possible, games need to move their anticheat to the server. Client anticheat, especially the way gaming companies seem to want it, is incompatible with user freedom.
CelDaemon
If anything there aren't enough cool and interesting ideas being explored imo
CelDaemon
I assure you this isn't AI assisted, it's just full on vibecoded-
Guess what. It's slop! Awful mod compat too, bytecode modifications are implemented in just about the worst way possible.
