Not much of a gamble, it's pretty easy to get around, in major centres language isn't that much of an issue, outside of the obvious dodgy areas it's pretty safe.

Re tattoos, you're a foreigner, no one thinks you're Yakuza. I'm heavily tattooed, I don't cover mine and no one looked at me twice.

Re making friends, I wouldn't count on it...people are there doing their own thing, you should plan on doing yours too.

Tattoo shops, there's lots...but if you plan on getting some work done it's probably worth booking ahead.

Re cash, most places in major centres take card the exceptions being some smaller eateries, temples/shrines, smaller shops and the trains. If you've got a few 30k on you you'll be OK.

As for getting there if (assuming Aus means Australia) then I highly recommend JAL if flying from Melbourne and ANA if flying from Sydney.

Alternatively you can go with Virgin from Melbourne though it's domestic to Sydney, then ANA code-share.

I don't recommend Qantas or jet star.
