Half my party went into the tower, half climbed onto the roof. So I'm making a 3D VTT (v.redd.it) [New tool]

Adding Bastions to my online campaign: how do you keep players caring past session 2? (self.DMAcademy) [Need Advice: Rules & Mechanics]

Same setup works here: the beamer PC joins as a player, you run things as the GM.
Map building being the slow part is exactly why I started this. You can generate a tavern, a house or a dungeon in a few seconds and then edit it by hand, or build the next room while the players are still talking. What takes you the longest right now, dungeons, towns, outdoor maps? And what do you build them in?
No need to wait for a beta, I'm inviting a few groups to an early build right now. It's free and still rough, I just ask for honest feedback after a session. I'll DM you the details.
Chernomur
Ha, remote controlling the PC next to the beamer is a very GM solution. Line-of-sight fog works the same way here, and the walls you build already block vision, so there's no separate fog layer to draw.
One thing I'd like to try for a setup like yours: the beamer PC just opens the table as its own screen, and you run everything from your laptop, no remote control needed. I want to check how that view handles the whole party's vision before I promise anything. What bugs you most about the current setup?
Chernomur
Legally I'm sure it's doable, WotC owns the IP and the art direction anyway. The catch is technical: assets made for a game like that are built for a gaming PC, with dense meshes, high-res textures and lighting tuned for cinematic shots. Drop a few dozen of them into a tavern scene in a browser and you're right back at the problem that sank Sigil: the player on the old laptop can't run it.
For a VTT you'd want the opposite: simpler models that snap together on a grid and look fine from above. So even with the deal signed, someone would still have to rebuild most of it. The art style and the creature designs could carry over, the files mostly couldn't.

Oh nice, a projector table is a setup I'd love to see this on. Honestly though: right now it's built for mouse and keyboard, the tablet controls aren't there yet, that's planned for later. A laptop driving the beamer works fine already: there's a top-down view on one key and you can hide the whole interface, so the table just shows the map and the minis.
How do you use it in the two groups, map on the beamer and the tablets for sheets? If one of the groups ever plays with a laptop on the projector, I'd be happy to let you try the early build there.

A heist is honestly the kind of arc I was hoping someone would bring up. Doors you can lock, lights the party can put out to sneak past, fog that only shows what each hero has actually seen, and you can drop to eye level and peek around a corner to check where the guard is. Multi-storey buildings too, so the rooftop entry is a real option. Handouts like the vault plans or a stolen letter pop up on everyone's screen.
I'm inviting a few groups to an early build right now, and a 4-person Discord group running a heist sounds like a perfect test. It's free and still rough, I just ask for honest feedback after the session. Want me to DM you the details? When does the arc start?
Chernomur
And if people like the project, I'd love to add a way to share maps right on the platform, so you could publish a scene and others could open it in their own game with one click.
Chernomur
Thanks! Not yet. Right now you can download a scene with its files, but in Polymancer's own format. A GLB export isn't there, though it's very doable since everything is already built from glTF pieces.
What would you use it for: 3D printing, rendering in Blender, another tool? That would help me figure out what the export needs to include (just the geometry, or lights and textures too).
Chernomur
Thanks, and nice to meet you! Turnipworks looks great, and going fully open source with the assets in the repo is a generous move. Good to see more people betting on 3D in the browser.
And thanks for offering the assets! Like you said, the styles are pretty different, so I'll stick with building my own to keep everything consistent. Good luck with the launch, I'll be watching!
Chernomur
GM and developer here. I don't think 3D itself is the problem. I think the cost of 3D was.
If I remember right, Sigil was a separate download with fairly heavy system requirements. That's a lot to ask before the first roll: most groups I know have at least one player on an old laptop, and online play already competes with Discord and five other tabs. For 3D to win it has to be cheaper than 2D, not just prettier. Quicker to build, runs on anything, and gives you something 2D can't, like height and line of sight you can actually see.
It also launched into a market where Foundry, Roll20 and Owlbear already work and people have years of maps and modules there. A new tool needs a reason to switch on day one, and "it looks great" isn't enough when your Thursday game has to start at 7.
So I'd vote 4: the bet on 3D was fine, the price of entry for the whole group was too high.

I hope there’ll be a "mage hand" spell :D ? Something to flick a "piece" off the board - or swap the positions of these "non-chess" pieces?
Chernomur
Thanks, I'll DM you!
And fair point on AI. I use an AI coding assistant a lot, for the table's code and also for the Blender scripts that build the 3D models. Models are put together from simple shapes with explicit sizes, so every step is visible and editable; there's no text-to-3D or image-to-3D generation and no AI images or textures. I decide what gets built and review every piece. About 90 models are from Quaternius (CC0). There's no AI in the table itself. I'll add this to the post.

Thanks! You can already drop a Dungeon Alchemist render onto the floor as a 2D map and put walls, tokens and 3D props on top, so that route works today. Walls, doors and lights don't come across yet, you'd redraw those.
I've got a pile of Dungeon Alchemist maps myself, so I'm thinking of adding a proper import later: load the export, and it rebuilds the walls, doors and lights with Polymancer's own pieces, with your render kept underneath for the furniture. No date yet, but it's on my list.
Chernomur
Quite a lot out of the box: about 1,300 low poly models in ~50 kits, all in one style. Walls, floors, roofs, doors and stairs that snap together, plus furniture, props, lights, trees and rocks. Taverns, houses, castles, crypts, caves, sewers, a harbor, temples, ruins and so on, and the ground is painted with a brush.
I'm trying to cover everything a typical campaign needs, and I've just started on a 1920s set too. Are you asking because you keep running out of assets in other VTTs?
Chernomur
If you want this to be a massive twist, I'd suggest two ways to handle it:
1. The "Miniature Box" start: Start them off already shrunk or enchanted, but they don't know it yet. Put them in an enclosed environment that feels like a normal dungeon to them, but is actually just a terrarium or a literal box of miniatures (maybe they're in a collector's or a hag's lair). After a couple of sessions, they finally break outside into the "real," giant world. It's a huge reveal, and it gives them an immediate hook: find out who cursed them and how to get back to normal.
2. The Mid-Campaign Shrink: Start them normal-sized, and shrink them later on via magic, a trap, or crossing into a weird plane. If you go this route, you should definitely foreshadow it first. Drop some clues like strange notes, or have them encounter randomly enlarged or shrunken animals before it actually happens to the party. An ordinary ant scaled up is honestly scarier than a Tarrasque sometimes :D
Either way sounds like a really fun concept!
Chernomur
I totally get you - and yes, I'm one of those people building their own table. That's exactly why in mine the GM can change the scene mid-session: walls, floors, furniture, lights, right in the same window everyone's playing in. I got so tired of jumping between apps just to tweak a couple of details.
Here's what it looks like:
Chernomur
Thanks! Yeah, I want to get a full sleeve with all my nerdy stuff. Since I’m a software developer, Digimon covers both areas of my life! :D
What was your first tattoo?
Chernomur
I've thought about Gyarados! That’s a cool idea!
Chernomur
Hi! Try checking the Import Settings of your textures. Ensure 'sRGB (Color Texture)' is checked - that's usually the culprit in Linear Space.
As for the design, I'd recommend looking at real online music stores for inspiration and trying to mimic their layout. Also, fonts are crucial. If you swap the default font for something else, it’ll instantly look much better!
Chernomur
Thanks, man! I'm stoked with how it turned out.
Chernomur
Thank you! All my friends told me, 'It’s too big for a first tattoo!' :D
I’m a big fan of DemiDevimon, Wizardmon, Devidramon, and Devimon... honestly, I like too many Digimon! I'm still weighing my options... maybe I’ll even add something from another fandom.
Chernomur
Hmm, I've thought about that, but I'd rather go with a different Digimon or maybe even a character from another fandom.
Haha, a party convinced everyone is lying to them is the best kind of party.
Dec 1st works great, and no need to give up your spot. Before that, feel free to just poke around and play with it, no need to run a session. If you share any thoughts, I'd be really happy.
I'm finishing a few fixes right now, and I'll DM you the access in the next couple of days.
