In a societal breakdown, money isn't buying anything and the treats aren't being produced. There's still some reasonably priced apartments in the area too. If you're in the market for a home, westmont is going to be cheaper than downers.

To expand on this, westmont and DG may as well be the same city, I live in the downtown of one and can walk to the other down town in twenty minutes, or take a five minute car ride or train ride. Being able to connect to all the other great towns along the bnsf line is a major plus. Absolutely fantastic area to live and raise a family, with happening down towns with plenty to do, and it's half hour car ride to downtown Chicago when traffic is good.

I got a summer job there like twenty years ago and they paid minimum wage, recently I bought my first house for 400k a couple years back and my direct neighbor is a gentleman near social security age who's worked at Jewel all his life and was able to raise a family, have multiple kids and buy the house next to me, granted he bought it like forty years ago, but still. I'm not that close to him but I'm assuming his wages are grandfathered in from before their union became a tool of management and their older, boomer members.
