Why take these classes when AI already does this stuff ?

but for postdocs, phds, master etc. students of mathematics this timeline is not fun.

Not in America. Americans have legendary grit and perseverance. Not sure about the rest of the world. Hard work made America what it is today. The American is uniquely adapted to striving and overcoming any obstacle that comes his way, including AI.

Son, I'm disappointed in you. Two thousand dollars is not a lot of money. In 1974, two thousand dollars was the down payment on a three-bedroom ranch that's worth half a million today, and I complained about the interest rate the entire time.

Now two thousand dollars gets you three DoorDash orders and the Ozempic to undo them. I understand. Your generation got handed an iPad and a housing market, and only one of them was built to last.

That's why y'all out here inspecting armrests. You were raised on glass sandwiches milled by God himself, so anything with a mold seam looks like a defect. Nobody wants to ask the real question, which is whether the chair outlives the Klarna plan. It will. It'll outlive the Klarna plan, your landlord, and probably your next 4 jobs.

Y'all will inspect 3mm of plastic harder than the drywall on the house you bid $40k over asking for. We never inspected drywall. We couldn't. It was full of asbestos.

In 1974 I bought a Chevy Vega where the doors were 8mm off and the whole thing rusted before I got it home, and I thanked God for it. Your chair is fine. HM gives you 12 years of warranty, which is 11 more than my first marriage.

This is a generational problem caused by lazy parenting. Parents throw iPads at their kids to shut them up and now we're seeing the downstream effects: every single kid expects every single object to be built like an iPad: solid aluminum and glass with not a single millimeter of misalignment, excess material, etc.

The demise of high school shop class has compounded this issue. Kids grow up thinking iPhones and iPads are the standard of "build quality" and that achieving iPad level "build quality" is trivial. Shop class and woodworking would smack that idea down harder than Rick James. Shop and woodworking would teach humility. Instead we get the worst of both worlds: wild expectations without temperment. Kids out here thinking everything can be built with invisible seams and joins when they can't even make a mortise and tenon.

Kids really out here with Jony Ive taste, section 8 budgets, and Kendall Jenner cucumber-cutting skills.

We understand your mom gave you an iPad at birth and that the aluminum and glass slab created by Steve Jobs and Sir Jony Ive is the only reference you have for "build quality" but rest assured that your chair is normal and it's not going to break and leave you bankrupt.

Part of growing up is realizing that not everything is a Sir Jony Ive piece of anodized aluminum and glass. Engineering plastics exist. Tolerances exist. Plastic molding artifacts exist.

Just because your only knowledge of plastics is your Airpods case doesn't mean that all plastic items are going to be built like your Airpods case. There's an entire universe of plastics out there, including in your chair, that Apple almost never uses. And it's fairly cheap to make a small plastic object like your $5 perfectly smooth piece of plastic Anker USB-C charger feel expensive and "perfect" but there's absolutely no cheap way to make something as large and complex as a chair look and feel as perfect and clean as a plastic USB-C charging brick.

Thank you for your mirror passion because I feel exactly the same way about horrible US mirrors

Rust on those parts doesn't hurt

If it just pulls off like that and you've already pushed the seat all the way back during the initial install -- past the detent -- then something is amiss.

That's not what I meant

Technically for H4 lamps there ARE legal-ish and safe LED options out there that can perform better than halogen, but, they're not called DDM Tuning bulbs. They're from Philips and Osram's European catalog.

Europe has pretty strict vehicle inspections. For example, Germany warns that if you're running illegal LEDs and get in an accident, they'll cancel your insurance and leave your liable for the bill.

However, they've just started approving certain LED H4 bulbs, after years of deliberation and product testing.

If you do decide to skip a replacement from eBay, the only adhesive I could recommend is 3M vhb tape.

It was a joke

Very familiar with these. I had one with this exact style "chrome" frame and the cushions were vinyl. In fact the vinyl was so good that I literally could not tell that it was vinyl until after I had sold it on eBay and went to ship it out and I started unzipping it to inspect inside the cushions before boxing it up. Oops. Fortunately, the buyer never realized that it was actually vinyl, not leather. Vinyl technology has progressed to the point of easily meeting or surpassing leather these days.

A lot of these old ones (they're like 50 years old) have been reupholstered over the years.

Also there's a bit of a false dichotomy here:

flaking vinyl or just cracked leather

Ekornes leather is always capable of flaking, too. Ekornes leather is almost always painted leather, and the paint is more than capable of separating from the leather and coming off in visible flakes. The paint is also capable of separating from the leather and coming off in invisibly sized flakes.

This particular vintage one has the all-too-typical wear pattern of a factory painted Ekornes leather chair. Very familiar with that cracking pattern in the armrests, lol. I've seen so many at this point ...

It shouldn't really be that tight in there, so, this is probably one of the rare cases where a screw extractor kit would work.

What in the AI is this?

No human could have arrived at such a wrong reply.

Sounds like a company that really needs to rope in its office expenses.

When you have your own company you'll probably be making more than $1200 a day.

ClassroomDecorum

Yes, used or refurb, lots of discussion on here on where room

Yeah basically

No

That's a great deal for $100 if you know how to replace a seat and won't fall into one of several traps when trying to repair the chair and cost yourself hours of your time and another $200 correcting your own mistakes.

Spin the hip pivot bolt inserts in the seat pan -- extra 2+ hours, extra $30 for locking pliers to save the hip bolts, or extra $50 to buy replacement hip bolts.

Decide to cheap out and replace just the frame and transfer the mesh -- extra 2+ hours, extra $100 for replacement mesh after you screw up the mesh transfer and it rips out the new frame
