Genuine favourite third party FinOps tool for Azure Only? (self.FinOps) [question ]

Yeah not a fan of Surveil.. feels just like a paid version of PowerBI

FinOps gets overlooked quite a bit because saving customers money on Azure can mean less margin, but the MRR you can generate from offering it as a managed service can be huge. Plus you're giving customers a reason to stick around by actually saving them money.
CloudShellHermit
Yes can confirm this is not self promo! Question is this built of PowerBI?
CloudShellHermit
Thanks for the reply. How come you didn't go for an Azure only FinOps tool if that's what you wanted it for?
CloudShellHermit
Yeha great point
CloudShellHermit
any that come to mind?

Rightsizing dynamic environments can get costly, especially when people are only looking at the short term picture. I See it all the time where no one bothers to look back at the last 12 months of usage before making changes

In the UK, I always look at Google reviews, but... I always keep in mind that people are way more likely to leave a negative review than a positive one, even if they’ve had a great experience somewhere.
CloudShellHermit
Exactly that! All im looking for is people preferences, not to be guided on what I should have
CloudShellHermit
Are you trying to pick the right size for new VMs or work out if the ones you’ve already got are oversized?
CloudShellHermit
I’d start with the free FinOps Practitioner stuff, that’ll give you a decent idea of what it’s all about. If you’ve got the $500 to spend on the cert after that I’d probably do it.
I’d also look outside of just FinOps though. AZ-900 or AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner would both be worth looking at as you’ll need to understand the actual cloud side too. Could pick one or even do both while you’re figuring out what you prefer.

Always wondered why people build rather than buy with FinOps. I get you can build it exactly how you want it (probably answered my own question there..) but when companies are pouring millions into FinOps platforms, surely there’s some benefit to just buying one?
Might be overkill for what you need right now, but surely it saves a lot of headaches down the line.

Have you looked at working for a MSP? Quite a few of them offer FinOps as a managed service now. With 6 years of cloud experience already that could be a pretty easy way into a "proper" FinOps role without having to take a pay cut?

thing is with FinOps I kinda see it like having a gardener. You could get someone in once a year to cut everything back and tidy it up, and if you’ve got a small garden that’s probably enough.
But if you’ve got a massive estate it probably works out cheaper having someone keep on top of it all the time. Same thing with cloud really, if you’re spending a shit load every month, small bits of waste add up pretty quickly.
Especially now with AI/token usage and stuff like that where costs can get away from you pretty fast.

I’d probably start with Practitioner tbh. Gives you the broader FinOps foundation first, then you can always go deeper with Engineer after. With your background you’d probably fly through a lot of it anyway.
Yeah ive used turbo360 for cost analyser in azure was good, didnt know they now do M365?
