There was a time when I used to rely almost entirely on my own willpower and strength to resist lust. I could abstain for weeks or even months, and during those periods I felt like I was in complete control of my body and mind.

But eventually, I would fall into temptation. And when that happened, I experienced a lot of shame, guilt, and self-hatred. Because I had been depending so much on myself, I saw my failure as a personal failure. I would blame myself and become very harsh and unloving toward myself.

Over time, I also realized that I wasn't always turning to it simply because I wanted pleasure. A lot of the time, I was using it as an escape from pain — things like loneliness, anxiety, emotional wounds, or spiritual struggles. I could avoid dealing with those things for weeks, but when the pain eventually caught up with me, I would look for some immediate relief. And once I gave in, I could end up bingeing because I had been suppressing those desires and emotions for so long.

The way I think about it is like a hungry wolf that has been starving for a long time. If you suddenly give it a little food, it doesn't necessarily stop after one bite. Because it's been deprived, it wants to keep eating until that feeling of hunger is satisfied.

That's what I began to recognize in myself. My abstinence was sometimes based almost entirely on willpower and suppression. I was trying to control myself rather than actually dealing with what was happening inside me.

What has changed for me is that I'm no longer trying to depend solely on myself. I've started learning to depend on God and surrender those struggles to Jesus. For me, resisting temptation isn't just about saying, "I have to be strong enough not to do this." It's about replacing that dependence with something deeper — turning toward God, prayer, love, and actually facing the pain rather than escaping from it.

So for me, it's less about simply resisting and more about replacing. Instead of trying to satisfy my need for comfort, love, or relief through lust, I'm learning to bring those needs to God.

I'm still a work in progress, and I don't claim that I have everything figured out. But I've noticed that when I stop treating myself as my own source of strength and start surrendering to God, the struggle feels very different.
