TIL over a century before independence was declared, on the 6th of June 1671 John Evelyn, councillor of the Foreign Plantations for Charles II, regarded New England "a people almost upon the very brink of renouncing any dependence on the Crown" (gutenberg.org)

I don't think they're misremembering - athough the WW2 steel is important too - I think they are correctly remembering a different case, which featured in this sci show video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0A9M5wHBA4

O, for the simplicity of being a rat in a box, pressing the button that randomly dispenses cheese.

Crusader1089

I got my data from the Simpsons Wiki page about bowling, not including mentions of bowling. I didn't verify if the data was correct.

Assuming this trend continues by episode 1000 the Simpsons will be approximately 1.8% bowling (2.2% as of the latest bowling episode).

I heard a lot of subplots were cut out of Demolition Man, but I doubt she was in any of them.

Relevant text because it's a huge long diary:

6th June, 1671. I went to Council, where was produced a most exact and ample information of the state[Pg 67] of Jamaica, and of the best expedients as to New England, on which there was a long debate; but at length it was concluded that, if any, it should be only a conciliating paper at first, or civil letter, till we had better information of the present face of things, since we understood they were a people almost upon the very brink of renouncing any dependence on the Crown

And also this, slightly earlier, entry:

26th May, 1671. The Earl of Bristol's house in Queen's Street [Lincoln's Inn Fields] was taken for the Commissioners of Trade and Plantations, and furnished with rich hangings of the King's. It consisted of seven rooms on a floor, with a long gallery, gardens, etc. This day we met the Duke of Buckingham, Earl of Lauderdale, Lord Culpeper, Sir George Carteret, Vice-Chamberlain, and myself, had the oaths given us by the Earl of Sandwich, our President. It was to advise and counsel his Majesty, to the best of our abilities, for the well-governing of his Foreign Plantations, etc., the form very little differing from that given to the Privy Council. We then took our places at the Board in the Council-Chamber, a very large room furnished with atlases, maps, charts, globes, etc. Then came the Lord Keeper, Sir Orlando Bridgeman, Earl of Arlington, Secretary of State, Lord Ashley, Mr. Treasurer, Sir John Trevor, the other Secretary, Sir John Duncomb, Lord Allington, Mr. Grey, son to the Lord Grey, Mr. Henry Broncher, Sir Humphrey Winch, Sir John Finch, Mr. Waller, and Colonel Titus, of the bedchamber, with Mr. Slingsby, Secretary to the Council, and two Clerks of the Council, who had all been sworn some days before. Being all set, our Patent was read, and then the additional Patent, in which was recited this new establishment; then, was delivered to each a copy of the Patent, and of instructions: after which, we proceeded to business.[Pg 66]

The first thing we did was, to settle the form of a circular letter to the Governors of all his Majesty's Plantations and Territories in the West Indies and Islands thereof, to give them notice to whom they should apply themselves on all occasions, and to render us an account of their present state and government; but, what we most insisted on was, to know the condition of New England, which appearing to be very independent as to their regard to Old England, or his Majesty, rich and strong as they now were, there were great debates in what style to write to them; for the condition of that Colony was such, that they were able to contest with all other Plantations about them, and there was fear of their breaking from all dependence on this nation; his Majesty, therefore, commended this affair more expressly. We, therefore, thought fit, in the first place, to acquaint ourselves as well as we could of the state of that place, by some whom we heard of that were newly come from thence, and to be informed of their present posture and condition; some of our Council were for sending them a menacing letter, which those who better understood the peevish and touchy humor of that Colony, were utterly against.

There is a lot of crossover though. It likely isn't a cinema-grade steadicam or an over-the-shoulder rig like some youtubers use, it's probably a $200-500 gimbal whose motors have enough power to balance a DSLR. Thanks to the market for phones professional and semi-professional gimbals have also plumetted in price.

Crusader1089

Its a strategy that works pretty fucking well for Apple.

Crusader1089

To be fair COD2, Condemned and Gun were all rock solid games. A friend of mine was very lucky and got a 360 for christmas that launch year and I can remember playing COD2 a lot with him. And Dead or Alive, which I think came out in the february of that year? Quake 4 I remember being not well optimised on 360, although a solid title. Perfect Dark Zero I remember being disappointing.

Crusader1089

You see, you'd think that, but no! The Saturn launch didn't even work for them. They had burnt out a lot of their brand loyalty with the 32X add on, the price point was very high, and there were very few launch titles and those launch titles were quite buggy. The decision to launch at E3 was to get out ahead of Sony, which had them scared shitless.

And the surprise launch mostly just confused people. This wasn't the age of tuning into E3 online, or reading updates online, this was when E3 was very much a press conference. It was for press and other industry parties to mingle and announce things. Most people didn't expect anything said there to get to their customers for at least a day, and likely a month later.

It was very much an act of desperation to try to hold onto the American market. Within 2 years Sega admitted "the saturn is not our future" and started to hype up the dreamcast at E3 1997.

Crusader1089

That's a dreamcast game, my dude. Five years later.

Crusader1089

From what I understand some retailers were pissed off that they didn't get told about the launch and didn't get any units, so they refused to stock/promote the console.

Retailers that did get units were pissed off they didn't get to do any promotion, or launch events, or pre-orders, or any of the activities in the normal console launch cycle. Although this was less pissed off than the people who didn't get units.

Sega pretty much pissed off all American retailers.

Crusader1089

Sega Saturn's launch would have been amazing today. Their E3 conference just mic dropped "launching today at select retailers". People would go fucking nuts if, say, the PS5 had dropped during an E3 reveal. But in 1995 people were reading about it in the paper the next day, or in next month's sega magazine.

Edit: E3 1995 did give Sony a fucking amazing mic drop moment as well. The Sega Saturn had just launched for $399. After a bit of blerb from engineers about the technology of the Playstation Sony of America came up to give their main conference speech, approached the mic, checked his notes, said "Two-ninety-nine" and then left the podium.

It can be extremely cathartic to indulge in such desires, but in the end it the medical system should treat people equally.

At the moment a patient's prior behaviour is really only ever a concern in the matter of organ donation. Organs are such a precious resource they cannot be risked on individuals who will abuse them, chronic alcoholics for example. Even then, there is leeway and compassion granted to many even in 'at risk' situations - such as recovered alcoholics or former smokers.

If the ICU he is in really is at capacity, his decision making could become an ethical discussion and his ejection considered. However I doubt that is the case, and even if it were, it would I think be one of the first instances of its discussion in real life medical ethics.

The medical system should not become a weapon to use against one's enemies even against such hateful people as the above, which I think, is truly what you are desiring even if you belief it is a just reward.

And I say this as someone who condemns people like this, who is just as angry and as upset as you are. A few months ago I had to restrain myself from praying for the death of a politician I despised, who had caused so much harm, and would be going on to cause more harm and had ended up in the ICU with covid.

Crusader1089

It does weird me out to think that they only love it because we killed or neutered all the ones who didn't love it.
