I'm looking for something a little more crunchy (that will force players to seek cover and etc.) and that doesnt make something like "pistols do 1d6 of damage, rifles do 1d8" and that type of strange stuff

Cueca_Freiada

Yea, I heard of Delta Green, I just thought it was a little too "abstract", I'm not sure but it seems I'll need to double check it.

Cueca_Freiada

Well, what I want is "A crunchy system that makes it light through digital assistance", most of the crunchy stuff do generate some tough (and fun to make) decisions. What I belive is that if I try to do something more "classic" (fully abandoning the tools I created), I'd be going against big names that do their job quite well such as Delta Green and Twilight 2000, there's no reason for me to try and compete against them.

Anyway, thanks for the insights and feedback

Cueca_Freiada

Wind is accounted on M (wind applies a fix modifier for shots at 50m or more), shooting moving targets implie in disavantage, the ballistic and armor problem are solved in other occasion.

I just didn't show you all of the combat spectrum because this takes around 30 pages of the player's rulebook (does he have to know it all times, mostly not, you can learn it and apply certain rules slowly, as you get to know the system).

In the end, I do think I can make a different (and enjoyable) combat experience, that's what I can notice from my players.

When you say "demand using a tool that makes playing your game at the table more difficult", I'd say it's the opposite: I know that the system is dense, hard and slow, so I offer tools that make it faster.

Besides, what are the downsides to try and make something complex that runs nicely because of digital assistance? Like, there are so many games that already do so well at their tasks just requiring pen and paper. What I'm proposing is to extend this limit by using technology.

What I understood from what you said until now is that "no tabletop RPG should be complex to a level that it needs (or at least runs a lot better with) digital tools", I'd like to understand why this is bad, why digital tools are something bad. The only reasons I found were that phones and notebooks can be attention drainers and that lots of people use TTRPG to avoid screens. If there is no other reason than these two, I don't see a reason to drop my ideas so far into development.

Cueca_Freiada

No, I do not work with percentages, and no, I do not think any other system can do what mine does (otherwise, I'd be playing these systems).

You talked about "modifiers" and that's not what the .xlsx resolves. I'll give you an example to what is something "different" that, personaly I love about the system.

The Dificulty Class of a shot is calculated by: DC = 15 + M + (R-D)/V.
M = Fixed Ambient Modifiers
R = "Standard Range" (the distance where a shot should be 50% chance to land)
D = Distance Between Shooter and Target
V = "Weapon Variance" (how the behavior of the weapon changes based on distance, a low V means the weapon is wonderful at CQB, a high V means the gun is quite consistent through all ranges)
I use the d30 for shoots
See how this would be a nightmare to do on paper, you could say "oh, just use the good old Armor Class system or something" but I found this would be the best way to make guns realistic.

There's also the hunger, thirst and sleep needs, they are calculated by "Hour-Points"

Let's say you have 18 hour-points of hunger, this will apply a series of debuffs to your character and wouldn't be easy to keep track
This allows my system to not be just "you have to eat once a day" or any other abstraction, I'm aiming for realism here as well

All this generates choices for the player: "Do I buy cheap food or do I buy the one that replenishes more Hour-Points?", "I have a Pistol, this place is too wide open, I shouldn't fight unless I get enough cover", etc.

So I just believe that I cannot make abstractions that feel reallistic AND are playable without these tools. OFC I am planning on adding them, but they will remove a lot of the tension and thrill that's in the system.

In the end, you can enjoy the full experience just by using a cellphone, laptop or any other mobile device. This will be bad for you solely if you'd like to avoid them at max for "eletronic detoxing" or avoid attention leaks at the table.

Makes sense?

Cueca_Freiada

Dependem dela pra avançar a investigação?

Cueca_Freiada

Oh, but the tool is not for the GM (ofc the GM has tools, but they serve other purpose), it's for the player, he administers its own health, conditions, ammo, etc.. I get it might be "risky" to leave it to the player but I'd say it's a matter of maturity while playing. The tools help the player administer it's own character (in combat or off of it). Makes sense?
It would be basically the same thing as updating your character sheet after something happened in any other game

Cueca_Freiada

There's a point, I tried to not use assistance, and the feeling wouldn't be the same, you can have hunger, localized wounds, etc., but they will be either binary or too weird. I couldn't come up with any solution and for my campaing (we are running on VTTs), it's been fantastic, the combat is highly geometric, you can tell apart different resources and consumables, etc..

What I mean is, if someone wants something "simpler", maybe Twilight 2000, Delta Green or maybe a modded Cyberpunk Red would do the job quite well.

What I propose is: "what if there was a TTRPG styled game that can be really complex (in a way that it generates choices, not just being hard for being hard) AND run smoothly", the drawback I had to embrace (which, for me, ain't that big) is digital automation.

Cueca_Freiada

I still meant that, but where does it generate a problem? Too much screen for this tipe of activity? Too crunchy? Like, if I handled all you need to start a campaing with your friends, what would lead you to say no? What I understood is that a big portion of RPG players will avoid screens as most as possible, if that's the case, than I simply can't do anything about it. Everyone should play the way they intended, I was just curious to know how many people would be open to try something like that.

Cueca_Freiada

Oh, it's not that deep, when I say "you cannot play without these tools", I mean "the game has so much rules that it's probably better to let a machine do the boring part of it", you can absolutely read everything and apply it to a sheet of paper, what I propose is to let all the boring stuff to these tools.

I simply believe that it's impractical to play without said tools, the GM alredy has to deal with too much (planing the session, the setup, the meeting, maybe even balancing), dealing with hunger, injuries, dependencies, etc. would probably drag the game too much.

From a gameplay aspect, it's not far from playing any other system, you still note lots of things on your character sheet, but this time, the sheet is on a screen.

When you said "Giving the tools the input data, and communicating the results to the player, sounds like a shitty task to add to the GMs already tough job." that's exactly why the sheets are used for, the GM doesn't manage every single player's biology, the sheet does it

You can look at it like those DnD character sheets online where you put in like "STR = 16" and in another cell a "+3" pops up. This does the exact same thing but for lots of other mechanics

Cueca_Freiada

yeah, my plan is originally to have it published for free out there. Btw, great point, my plan is to be niche, I want to deliver complex mechanics that doesn't require anyone to calculate too much and remember obscure details.

The game does embrace the "crunch", I just think it can bee too much to be practical (all of the math, exceptions, applications and even reasons to exist are on the player rulebook), I just think that no one would like to play it because of the excess of rules (it might not be that much, and I'll even start working on modules that make the gameplay without the sheet a little more viable, it's just a substitute for the old paper sheets)

I can tell that gameplay isn't an issue (i'm holding a 5 player campaing for almost a year now and they learnt the system quite fast, even though I know all the rules cus I made them), the issue shows up for any group that want to play RPG to avoid screens, other than that, it could be compared to play on Roll20 or any other VTT.

Cueca_Freiada

oh, yes, you won't be. That's another reason to why the tools are there, they make it simpler for the most obscure rules to be applied.

I guess we're refering to "game engine" as different things. When I say "the GM is the game engine" I mean that you will give the scenario, the NPCs, the tasks, the struggles, etc.. The mechanics to bleeding, time passing, shooting, etc. will be ran on the tools.
I 100% understand if, for you, any digital assistance beside a calculator is too much, lots of people play TTRPGs specifically to avoid screens and things like that. I'm proposing something that will give you the depth of Stalker Gamma and EFT without exploding your cranium with math.

But yeah, I'm making the game and it makes this look "too easy" for me, that's why we're having this discussion, thanks for the insights btw.

Cueca_Freiada

Well, I haven't heard from any that would work for me. I'm not modding any system, I'm making one from scratch (sure it has some inspirations but it still is something different).

Most of the math involves concepts that I created such as "hour-points" for needs, "Variance" and "Standard Range" for guns, I don't think any pre-made software could work with that, though, if you know about any, pls let me know, I'd love to take a look.
