I don’t think it is the tech itself that make utopia, dystopia, etc-topia. It is what we do with it.

Unfortunately the answer is going to be an it depends.

It looks like the solution above uses a left join so in the new/ churned accounts example I described above you are leaving out one side of that.

I’ve used Ai both at work to help with development as well as for my website and I find it can be good at giving an answer if it has all the context but context can sometimes be very nuanced.

My recommendation for you would be to get some kind of editor with data behind it take the solutions the AI gives you and try to find scenarios where that doesn’t work. You can also press the AI for any caveats it may have or scenarios where another solution would be better , but I find it’s best to actually see it work or not for yourself and try to figure out why that is happening.

Lead and lag can work, but if you want to see differences where an account or something open or closed and therefore might not be in the data from one year to the next then I would recommend a full outer join on the table self join and when you do the difference between date a and date b be sure to use coalesce or ifnull to get a zero for the missing row.

That kind of scenario is something that could be in an interview gotcha and it also frequently comes in real day to day work.

I agree. I've shot myself in the foot on Null and other edge cases too many times to count.

So it seems you are running with how you might make that into a deliverable data project rather than narrowly answering the SQL question.
