Unfortunately not good enough for the nookie.

Dumb ways to die~

Woohoo! I’m not alone. I see these posts and think… “man my Latino parents rock…”

DaBusStopHur

It gets significantly easier the more you do it… but even with decades of experience, you’ll still get curve balls.

My teacher advice for the curve balls? Give the solution as two possible choices. “In the past, students failed this assignment and had to make up the points later. However, I could allow them to do it again on paper and in person. Do you want to talk to John and let me know which we should do tomorrow?”

DaBusStopHur

It’s not like that everywhere. But poop does slide down hill. Bad leadership will 100% destroy a building.

DaBusStopHur

Whose fault? Admin. No detention? Student sent to the office and returned the same period? Asked you not to send him back?

What to do? Make every attempt to solve this within your classroom because this isn’t getting solved by admin. Document every attempt because you may need to send him back to the office. If you ever do, DO NOT accept him back during that period and get that documentation out because you’re definitely going to have a talk with admin.

DaBusStopHur

Just because one can, doesn’t mean one should.

This will not end well. (For the admin…)

Power is a collective perception that exists only because people choose to believe in it and obey.

“Can I get $800 under… things I didn’t know that existed as a secondary teacher Alex?”

DaBusStopHur

I clicked on omega like… “what’s this? Omg, it’s omega— …and it’s dead…” rapid fire is nuts.

DaBusStopHur

Well…

I took off the day to relax but instead replaced my AC capacitor and fan motor…

I’ve been laughing at myself… “I won the poor man’s lottery. Woohoo!! Took off on the perfect day.”

Sooooo… hardly pay the bills? Not exactly, BUT… I’m not paying someone to paint my house, not going out to eat every night, I make my own coffee, and I fix my own shit.

I haven’t missed a bill but my savings are slow… my state’s retirement is pretty good. (I hope… fuck inflation)

Idk. What’s poor? (Relatively speaking? I had dino nuggies and SpongeBob mac&cheese for dinner. Am I poor?)

Call a structural engineer that’s not associated with a foundation company.

If they say yes, get two more quotes. $6,800 is really cheap. This will most likely be the lowest bid.

Also be prepared to repair drywall, tile, and mortar when lifting is complete. (Read the liability and consent paperwork well)

DaBusStopHur

Welcome to the shit show! We fully adopted it years ago and I understand my admin’s points. However, it’s very different on paper than in practice.

Have fun explaining it to parents.

DaBusStopHur

Stanton in Fayetteville or Davis in Springdale. Wouldn’t call them cheap but reasonable.

DaBusStopHur

I take chairs.

DaBusStopHur

Just interesting that they entombed it. That metal is reacting differently to temperature shifts. Not typical practice but slaps it “it’s not going anywhere.”

DaBusStopHur

This might be unpopular but idc… everything you said after, “My issue is…” would be something I would say as a coach to my athletes. It’s simple, honest, and real. Nothing stated was inappropriate or out of line. Just an adult caring about a “kid” a sneeze away from adulthood.

DaBusStopHur

I remember hearing Vincent and was like… wait a minuuuuute.

DaBusStopHur

This made me smile.

DaBusStopHur

You can get creative with app scripts or apps to auto send it. Didn’t include that because the post was already heavy. Just be careful to not shift your columns.

DaBusStopHur

Preference… We have 3 other Mr. X’s

DaBusStopHur

Ehhh, …won’t be your last… this too shall pass (and return at a later date)

DaBusStopHur

Or should reduce the district staff enough to have legal counsel in house. Or even split the cost and counsel with neighboring districts if need be.

DaBusStopHur

Those numbers track but… not fun as a first year teacher. I’m sorry.

Here’s what I do…

I keep my own Google Sheets gradebook. It has their email address and their parent’s email address. On another tab I have this formula (=FILTER(Gradebook!D:D, Gradebook!W:W="Z") that pulls all the students/parent emails for any Z’s in that column.

I have an email template I’ve saved…

Subject: Missing Assignment [ ]

Body: Blahblahblah missing assignment [ ]. Blahblahblah Link here [ ].

Thank you, Coach X. Physical Science.

I just select all the column of emails and BCC everyone with the template.

I send these out every Friday afternoon then turn my do not disturb on.

I have about 20 assignments in my gradebook at week 9. Sooooo 20 emails which sounds like a lot but truly about 400~ total emails were sent (800~ if you count the parents). Takes me about 5 minutes when I get to copy and pasting.

I also do a makeup/extension day every two weeks. “Check your email for your zeros. No zeros? You’re doing this fun lab with me in the front.”

Edit: I call this “I’m going to annoy the shit out of you and your parents… and keep a record”

Assignment is an umbrella term in which exit ticket falls.

Exit ticket - generally shorter and must be turned in by the end of class.

Benefits? Something has to be turned in. No attempt? Odds are the student knew nothing. (But I could have probably told you that without the exit ticket. Idk.)

DaBusStopHur

Schools definitely have different cultures and it’s ok to jump ship.
