I want it so bad but couldn’t beat the Highscore

WAS KOSTET DER FISCH!

Delfmonkey

Äpfel und Birnen. Beides Obst.

Delfmonkey

Delfmonkey

And so should you. It’s alright to make mistakes. Admitting you was wrong makes you a responsible adult you know?

Ok now: sex: male, voice: female. Breast and vagina.

I see you’re still full of hope. Well good for you (seriously). Me I’m more of a grim dark and bitter old fella.

True that. About 99% of all species that have ever lived have gone extinct—but over the course of 3.8 billion years. The natural lifespan of a species is 1–10 million years. This argument is like saying, “Everyone dies eventually, so it doesn't matter if the death rate today is 100 times higher than it was yesterday.”

The issue is the rate, not the question of whether it happens. The natural extinction rate is approximately 0.1 species per million species-years (De Vos 2015); today, it is about 100, and for vertebrates, up to 1,000—100 to 1,000 times higher. The 477 vertebrate species lost since 1900 would naturally have taken 800–10,000 years to go extinct (Ceballos 2015). IPBES 2019: approximately 1 million species are threatened. Although documented extinction rates have been declining for ~100 years (Saban & Wiens 2025), the danger lies in the 49K critically endangered species.

Implications for us: 75% of food crops depend on pollinators, with a value of $235–577 billion per year; 40% of insect pollinators are threatened (IPBES 2016). 3 billion people rely primarily on fish for their protein, and 4 billion use natural remedies (IPBES 2019). The World Bank projects a loss of $2.7 trillion per year starting in 2030 if pollination, fisheries, and forestry collapse; poor countries could lose up to 10% of their GDP. Extinct species do not return and we are the ones setting the rate of extinction.

Delfmonkey

Many huh?

My answer was an exaggeration, but reality shows that hardly any species has actually been saved.

The number of species permanently saved through self-sustaining conservation is small. There is no reliable global figure for this, and the number of cases is small. Verified cases of prevented extinctions: 28–48 bird and mammal species (1993–2020). Eighty-four per cent of U.S.-listed species remain permanently dependent on management. Of the 163,040 species listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), only 222 were downlisted between 2007 and 2024 due to genuine recovery. The number of species that are stable today without ongoing measures can be counted on two hands — or just a few dozen — and they all remain dependent on a ban (on hunting, DDT and whaling) that must not be lifted.

The cases that are truly a sure thing are almost all those in which a single factor (poison, hunting, whaling) has been eliminated by law. Where habitat is lacking or invasive species remain, there is no successful rescue.

Let’s say you’re right. That’s Murphy’s law. We have the bomb. We will have this. Climate is f0ckd beyond repair. And fun fact: no endangered species humans fought for has ever not went extinct.
