You still don’t have a better solution that doesn’t end in other more important geopolitical relations being sacrificed, or Ukraine losing against Russia due to lack of support, which is a non-starter.

Azerbaijan knows it can’t genocide Armenians if it wants the west to not intervene, and no amount of racism against Armenians is going to change that fact.

Russia made it their job to protect Armenia from Azerbaijan and now they won’t bc they’re too busy in Ukraine, this entire situation was caused by them and is all their fault.

That’s how sanctioning works.

If only the US sanctions Azerbaijan then it’s basically useless, Azerbaijan makes most of its money from selling oil, and the US does not need Azerbaijani oil, Europe does.

All we do is anger Azerbaijan and either let them sell oil to Europe anyways, which is worthless, and will not harm them enough to leave Nagorno-Karabakh, or if the EU also does sanctions, they will not get their oil and for reasons I have already explained, Europe will eventually stop dining Ukraine enough and Ukraine will lose to Russia, emboldening war and imperialism around the world.

There is no magical short term solution here that saves both our interests in Ukraine and saves the autonomy of Nagorno-Karabakh without sacrificing more important geopolitical relations.

All we can really do is set a line at massacring the Armenian population and be ready to negotiate the second the war in Ukraine ends.

We can’t sanction Turkey, they are in NATO, Turkey is unfortunately a critical ally in maintaining sanctions on Russia, holding the only entrance to the Black Sea, and preventing Russia from bringing military ships from the attic Baltic to support the Black Sea fleet.

They are indispensable, and sanctions over a conflict they are not directly involved would completely destroy relations, and likely further turkey’s decent into authoritarianism and nationalism.

Erdogan is not yet a dictator, he can still be voted out, and that is the only think we can hope for.

As for Azerbaijan, the EU signed a deal literally 2 and a half months ago agreeing to double gas imports by 2027.

Their goal is to stop buying Russian oil, and they can’t sanction Azerbaijani oil and Russian oil at the same time.

Ukraine is the more serious conflict, with civilians being massacred and tens of thousands already dead, and russia banking it’s entire futures on winning this war.

We can’t jeopardize Ukraine for sanctions in russia.

The second that conflict ends is when we can deal with Azerbaijan.

I want America and Europe to take charge in the region, a peaceful and cooperative Armenia and Azerbaijan without Russian involvement would be absolutely amazing, but we can’t do that right now, as it directly conflicts with our interests in Ukraine, and sanctioning Turkey, is going to do nothing but push it further into the sphere of Russia and China, which is just about the worst outcome of everything.

I cannot stress how important Turkey is as an ally for national security in the Mediterranean, the Middle East, the Black Sea region, and the Caucuses region.

So what the fuck should we do then?

This issue has historically been in Russia’s sphere of influence, Armenia is in the CTSO, essentially Russia’s NATO, they have historically chosen Armenian’s side in the conflict, played negotiator, and they kept peacekeeping forces there for decades, but they were all sent to Ukraine, which allowed Azerbaijan to do what it did.
