By the time I was exploring the maze of concrete blocks and waterways, they had installed a solid metal grate over the dangerous part. Still, Mum often warned me not to play in the water because ‘kid/s had been sucked under.’ At the time, I wasn’t sure it was true, my kid brain figured Mum just didn’t want me to have fun/get my clothes wet 😆 but the thought of it happening was enough to scare me away from trying.

It was on the corner of Collins and Swanston Streets, and extended to Little Collins. In the picture, that area on the right was along the Collins St side if I am correct.

Loved those trains! I rode on a red rattler at least once in memory, with the doors passengers could open manually, and leave open on hot days. I remember travelling on the blue trains too. The doors were controlled by the guard, but they were easy to force open while the train was moving to relive the red rattler experience 😆

In the 80s, the city square was part of a good day out for kids. We’d go there with Mum, after the ‘special trip to the city for clothes’ part was over. It cost nothing, and I spent hours entertaining myself. For a kid like me, it was quite a magical place that sparked my imagination.

Great offer - is it open to all? 😂

As for where or who can repair it - sometimes it’s a matter of just meeting someone who plays and asking them where they get their skins done. There are guys in Melbourne who learnt to make djembes growing up in Ghana, but I only know them through my teacher, word of mouth. If you don’t know anyone who plays, you could try following and reaching out to some local Afro/cuban bands on Facebook ( local to your area), or clubs, associations, community groups. I’m sure you’ll find someone once you’re headed in that direction 🙂🤘

If you’re in Australia I can recommend some people. Once it’s reskinned and tuned, it’ll be beautiful!

Thank you. Do you have a background in defence? I'm not taking the piss. I don't run in circles who have these sorts of conversations or knowledge - are you able to suggest a reliable article or YouTube channel related to arguments in favour of sensible military defence spending? My outlook has been shaped by pacifist idealism, and I find myself now having to seriously question my logic. Especially.since, as you point out for example, Ukraine. And there are others..It's all fine when it's other countries/groups needing to defend themselves, but when it comes to thinking about our (Australia's) own defence needs or role in the region, the lefter left don't offer anything coherent. Thanks again.

It looks like a pagan resting place - where elder drumsticks go to be remembered.

Lori Barbero fron Babes inToyland. At the gig i saw her at in the 90s, Lori put her drumkit centrestage up the front. While leadsinger Kate Bjelland did most of the songs, there was one ominous slow nimber belted out by Lori while thumping the kick and showing her absolute power around the kit. A drummer and woman not afraid to take up space and make a noise.

I'm looking at a used tempo right now for AUD$100 as my first kit for learning/practising on. This is great to hear.
