Computational Social Science PhD student here who uses Aurora on both my desktop (3700x + rtx 3060) and laptop (FW laptop 13 11th gen i5)!

Mostly use Positron for R and Python

Before elections means voters might freak out and punish the incumbent republican party, I'd guess.

There's something to what you say, but IMO it misses some of the reasons for the academic angst at what openAI is doing.

If it's the case that openAI tomorrow provided a cure for cancer that's ready to be tested out in trials and the like, then cancer researchers would be disheartened, sure, but they'd also be fairly excited as human beings. However, if openAI releases a "cure" that's still going to require a lot of rote human work to understand and then translate it into something that can be tested, you don't have the cure but what you have done is turn a bunch of highly skilled cancer researchers into proofreaders, which is a very frustrating place to be in.

And note another element of this situation: if a cancer lab internally produced this "intermediate" cure and then chose to translate it into something workable, so be it, that's their research modality. But what's happening here is a private for profit organisation doing it, and in the process, effectively forcing this skilled work -> rote work transition onto other researchers. To me, this is the main source of angst.

Welll, "cult" used to refer to any devotional group back in the day (cult of Apollo, cult of athena), so maybe the evil cults are just reclaiming their word. "Why yes, we do worship dark lord Belial, but we all do so as freethinking individuals who maintain healthy ties to their community outside our cult"

My headcanon is that by the time you fight the moon presence, you've ascended to a higher state where the dream projection of the moon presence is no longer a challenge, which is why it's an easy fight

Oh this is so cool, love me a good folklore based horror and the middle east/Arabic folklore is so underexplored in English language art, wishlisted!

DueAnalysis2

"just" bitter - bitterness that keeps coming in 2-3 waves is my problem with it. Like, you get over the first shock of bitterness, you think "ok, that was a bit rough but I could see liking it for its grassiness" and then the next wave hits, and the one after that

Clearly it's the crown guard that protects the crown

Or hell, neural networks themselves. NNs began with single layer perceptrons way back in the 1960s (I think) with Rosenblatt but it took till CNNs and the imagenet challenge for their full potential to be appreciated. I don't know enough about this specific training, but "this is old science" in CS or math doesn't necessarily mean this is outdated science.

You gotta crosspost this to r/cassettefuturism , we love seeing stuff like this there

DueAnalysis2

Hmm, I wonder about one of the Bulova Super Sevilles? Not vintage, but vintage inspired.

DueAnalysis2

Scratched "a bit"? I thought I was looking at a new crater dial or something

DueAnalysis2

Aaah gotcha!

DueAnalysis2

The Tsuki Yomi is incredible of course. I wonder if you'd want to swap out the garrison for a Roland to have a dressy watch when the occasion requires it.

DueAnalysis2

You guys don't get it, it's just like that scene where John Wick throws out the vibesiest adjectives he can for guns and the gun sommelier gives him a fucking gun. Each watch is paired with a "perspective" that you're supposed to carry while wearing it because that's how sigma males like John Wick chuff. Catch John Wick just asking for a Remington, pfft.

Uj/ there are designers who are genuinely really invested in design and for whom different designs carry specific ethoses. I'm sure 95% of watch wearers aren't designers though.

DueAnalysis2

Isn't Kinch from BTT somebody who enjoys drinking and generally carousing?

DueAnalysis2

Yeah, fantastic chemistry between the three leads lolol

DueAnalysis2

They even did this with the whole "Panam salutes the workers of district X" posters for the third movie IIRC. I honestly find these pretty immersive

DueAnalysis2

This is such a cool watch, the bracelet is incredible for conveying even more of that space age feel

DueAnalysis2

Huh, two TILs for the price of one! I'm so glad for both of them, the world is richer with their art

DueAnalysis2

My first thought reading this too

DueAnalysis2

No no no, if you're going bullshit, you need FULL bullshit. Something like she can only breathe through her skin because she's been experimented on or something. This one's waaay to sensible

DueAnalysis2

Man, this is like that XKCD comic, I'm so deep in my bubble I kinda assumed everyone just knows Terence Tao. I gotta get out more.

DueAnalysis2

I don't know if worldbuilding necessarily needs to be "strong" to make the story makes sense though. The Hunger Games tells an incredibly powerful story (IMO) about power, media, propaganda, (admittedly) exceptional individuals who through the power of the media and propaganda get elevated into a near mythic status whether they want it or not in the interest of power, and so on. The political economy of the world of Panam, and how America could even become Panam, makes little sense though, frankly. But this world is clearly a vessel to communicate something about its themes.

Even on Netflix, I don't know how many shows I've seen do this. Netflix produced shows I've recently watched: Castlevania, How to get to Heaven from Belfast, Haunted Hotel, Inside Job, Shadow and Bone (although I know this is an old show, so it's possible it might predate this "policy"), Bodkin (not a fan, but wasn't guilty of this to my memory)

The only one I can think of that had this was The Residence, and even there I'm not sure if the writers were trying to go for some sort of quirky-quippy "repeat what just happened in a deadpan for funnies". Admittedly I really disliked that show and didn't get farther than a couple of episodes.
