grab a sewing machine (my first was a cheap entry level brother machine and was great to learn on) - you could also achieve this by cutting out pieces of fabric (with sharp fabric scissors) and hand sewing them to garments to start with. Youtube is my god when it comes to learning, and i just watched lots of random short videos on the subject - 'how to thread a machine' 'how to sew in a straight line' 'how to do fabric appliqué' , then u pretty much learn as you go! good luck and have fun!!

haha, honestly, they were a pair of shorts to begin with - i patchworked lots of denim scrap together and made the shorts longer )))
