ElHeim

It's the official abbreviation :?

ElHeim

Eeh... Couple of misconceptions here, but I'm not at liberty to disclose (I've read the manga and a decent chunk of the novel)

ElHeim

Eh... Tomatoes, cacao and corn came specifically from North America.

ElHeim

Tell that to Palestinians

ElHeim

I don't support the sentence. It was a very partisan interpretation of the law and the Supreme Court put a remedy to it.

ElHeim

And we do. E.g. in Spanish Constitution:

a) the right to freely express and spread thoughts, ideas and opinions through words, in writing or by any other means of reproduction;

[...]

Every country that has freedom of speech sets the line somewhere though (the USA as well), but Americans somehow pretend that this isn't a thing or that 1st amendment is some kind of magic shield.

In this case this woman was tried for "injury to the victims of terrorism". This would be the same as mocking victims of 9/11, for example. And while in the US she wouldn't have been prosecuted for this particular kind of speech, she would have likely faced the other consequences (e.g., losing your job over that - or in her case, the ability to hold a civil servant position, which public school teachers are...)

Her problem was not just the tweets, but that the Governement was right-wing (and full of old-time Francoists) at the time and probably someone didn't like the jokes and decided to make an example of her. And most probably the judge was on the same side of the spectrum...

She was prosecuted and given a suspended sentence (she did never step in prison), but the worse part is that the sentence came with a ban from holding public office for something like 8 years, and she wanted to be a teacher. Public school teachers in Spain are civil servants, so you may see the problem here.

If you notice, this is not far from Trump's use and abuse of his presidency in cases going against public broadcasters (basically restricting their speech); prosecuting and deporting foreigners for expressing support on Palestinians; defunding (or threatening to) universities over ideological disagreement, etc.

At any rate, her case made it to the Supreme Court which one year later overturned the sentence because, among other things:

[...] repeating well-known jokes about an attack that happened 44 years ago, about which "endless jokes have been made", without any abusive comments toward the victim, "is socially and even morally reprehensible in terms of mocking a serious human tragedy," but "a penal sanction is not proportionate." [...]

There.

ElHeim

Irrelevant for this case. This woman was tried for "injuries to the victims of terrorism".

Edit: though it's true that she was prosecuted under PP.

ElHeim

Well, "pretty new" is a bit relative. Lamine has been at 31 matches with Spain's main team since 2003. Williams at 36... plus a number of other matches with the SUB-21 and SUB-19.

Not exactly wet behind the ears.

ElHeim

It was really unfortunate that both him and Lamine came to the WC recovering from injuries. During the 2024 they were in peak form and extremely damaging. This time Lamine was "alone" on one wing, but the moment Williams is in the opposite wing they divide the attention and there's less pressure on each of them.

"Those guys have the spine to protest against their government's corruption"

There, FIFY

First people needs to get out there and vote. And avoid these assholes preventing them to do so.

Some small nations will praise their own victories and such, but a big part of it was that in "modern" times (say over the past 1000 years) there was never a single large power over Europe. There were always more than one, or at least a very large one and several next-tier, but still powerful ones... which looked at each other with suspicion.

And what happens in that situation? There's always the fear that the larger of them will get too much power and gobble them all up; or that letting them getting that territory could cause you problems in the future, so... what to do when a big power wants a territory near yours? Well, you create problems for them, of course! This could be anywhere from just indirectly helping the underdog (lending money, shipping weapons...) to overtly go against the attacking power creating a new theater so that they couldn't devote resources to what you really didn't want to get conquered. At times this required allying with otherwise enemies.

This was still not enough all the time. Often some territory would end up under one of the powerful nations simply due to inheritance, or maybe conquered for a while.

ElHeim

I imagine there were Americans seriously thinking they'd get the cup, but they need to seriously touch grass. I know that big teams get upset every now and then... but their team is ranking mid 10-20 for a reason.

ElHeim

And I'm telling you that you're full of shit because "better athlete" has a context. If you can't do shit in a sport different than yours I don't call you a "bad athlete". I call you a specialist.

You can't accept that simple fact, apparently.

ElHeim

So, those smaller, slower, weaker, not-so-good-jumpers would just run around until the NFL players would be exhausted, without letting them touch the ball because the NFL players don't know how to play soccer, and proceed to score for the rest of the game.

Ok, ok. Not comparable sports. Let's do rugby instead! Put some of your NFL dudes to play rugby without any more specific training and see them fail miserably. In a game where there are no breaks because the ball is constantly live, like in soccer. Your "elites" would need to be running for 80 minutes. There's no specialization, so everyone needs to be good at offense and defense. There are no pads. Your elite players would be gasping for air before they knew what was happening.

Dude, I understand that Butthurt is the national sport in the US, but listen to me.

Did anyone suggest that soccer players would do well in American Football? No.

Did we suggest that they're less of an athlete for that reason? No.

But you need to pretend that peak soccer players are not elite athletes because apparently if you don't win, you're losing, or something. Even if we're not comparing sports here.

My ass... Cancer was there and people was acutely aware of not being exposed to sun more than needed. I grew in the countryside and my grandma never used sunscreen... but she was going to her plot of land to do any work (she had it mostly as a hobby after she put a shop) she would make sure as hell to get a large brimmed hat, at the least. If she'd come to the beach to keep an eye on us while my mother was doing something else, she'd avoid getting from under the umbrella as much as possible. At 80 she had better facial skin that my mom.

Some of the traditional farmer hats in my region (close to the tropics) have brims that go at least to the shoulder (see here - those women are fully covered not out of modesty, either; in the island next over it's even wider)

Mar-a-Lago, probably (one of) the worst nightmare(s) of Secret Service. Along with a bunch of other places where Trump likes to go as if he still were not the President.

Anyway, those were selfies. The only thing you can shoot with a phone are those exactly: pictures.

And after reading the news it seems like the guy was stopped at a checkpoint so he was never even into the same room as Trump or Vance. *Shrug*

[LN] This episode introduced the last two elements: dark (Lulomet, the guy with the tree) and foul (Genevis). It's often implied or even said directly that he's a nice guy that can't really control how he behaves. He comes out as creepy or annoying, laughing or joking at inappropriate times. After Kunon sees the spirit possessing Genevis, the implication is that what he says comes "filtered" through her hands, in ways he can't control, really. Foul magic has really interesting properties, but apparently it comes with huge cons.

First, GTFO. You don't want to be there whenever the owners of that money show up.

ElHeim

Well, [LN]already in Vol 1 (and in this episode, IIRC) Kunon gets a rough explanation about the crest works: your stars are fixed, but that only affects the amount of magic you can handle. As you've been told, your control, which does *not* depend on your crest level, is also an important factor. But... and this is spoiler of Vol 4, there are ways to increase the amount of magic you can handle beyond your star limit - it's just too slow for normal people

ElHeim

Quite an asshole. There are ways to prevent this, but you need to do the initial approach in a different way, so that there's as little space as possible behind you.
