Hello Ioana 🙏
EmptyMind76
It happens more than you might think
EmptyMind76
The precepts seem to matter to you when they are about piracy but they stop being important when it is about drinking. That tells me how seriously I should take your argument.
EmptyMind76
You said they weren't vows and now you are changing your argument to be about consequences. I don't care to debate but I definitely don't when you keep changing what you are debating. 🙏
EmptyMind76
The wording when I did the ceremony was explicit.
"vow to keep the precept of"
That is a binding vow to uphold the precepts. People were told in no uncertain terms that if they weren't ready to make that vow then they should not take that particular precept or not participate at all. It is a serious thing to take the precepts they aren't just opinions you abide by when it is convenient and to be dropped when inconvenient.
Even if you only think they are "training guidelines" where would the "training" part come into play if you just drop them whenever it is inconvenient to you to keep them?
EmptyMind76
I never said that precepts weren't voluntary but they ARE binding if you vow to uphold them.
It is an article on the Dharma Drum website
