LOL the game was never anywhere close to dark fantasy. Vanilla was full of bright pulsing lights everywhere and cartoony characters. Warcraft 3 was the same - the art is basically Marvel style comic book.

There's no correct answer because your system is too vague. You need to think of what is the goal you are trying to accomplish and then make clearer labels (or recognizing weapons/armor as shorthand for those). Offensive vs defensive combat items? Hand held vs apparel? Or maybe you have X items to put in Y boxes and are just looking to categorize in some way that leaves them roughly equally distributed?

"Is a hot dog a sandwich" isn't an interesting question because there's no hidden, deeper meaning within the words hot dog or sandwich. Those are social constructs that are losing usefulness because they are too vague for the question.

At its best it was an attempt to have clear, math based evidence and eschew the slop you saw on mmo champion or modern day discords. You might have some good ideas in those places but it is unfiltered and indistinguishable. What you got were the most accurate models and math, in a world with only a primitive version of simc, maybe some spreadsheets, and a very arcane set of game rules. EJ was invaluable in that environment, moreso than any class guides in modern WoW.

At its worst you had some mods who got intoxicated by their own power and translated their frustrations with their divorce and alcoholism into overly aggressive bans. It only got harder to join the discussions and contribute.

Now take those factors and change the environment of WoW to be less of a black box and have other forms of communication open up (like discord) and EJ died out.
