If you want to learn web development then Ruby on Rails, Python/Django or node.js may be a better choice. But Drupal with relevant modules installed gives you a head start, and more importantly it gives you a taste of what's it like to maintain a social network so you can decide early on if it's your thing. The skill of maintaining a website still applies to other web development work should you decide to move on.
