deeply politically contentious

It's HBO, 80% of the audience was probably skipping everything that wasn't a spicy Cassie scene

FrewdWoad

Interesting. Thanks.

Why do you hate ice-cream?

This isn't go to make anyone's day, but... most of the time when a new tribe/nation comes conquering/colonising a place, they didn't kill 95% of the inhabitants. It was 100%.

Places we tend to think of as being awful to the original inhabitants, like USA, Canada and Australia, are just the ones where they didn't murder absolutely everyone, and where some of the colonisers saw it as a bad thing, and have been saying so for a long time.

E.g.: Without looking it up, name the far-closer-to-extinct indigenous populations of Sri Lanka and Japan.

We tend to think of the "least" genocidal conquerors as the worst ones, only because a larger minority of them have the decency to have a smidge of shame about the past, and haven't done absolutely zero to try and restore history and/or make any sort of amends.

Are some kids are just not built for sports? And no amount of ‘heart’ will change that?

Yes.

Is your daughter shorter than other kids her age, or anything like that?

There might be undiagnosed health issues.

How's her diet?

Is she taking safe, effective, natural sports supplements like creatine?

FrewdWoad

It's also not the worst new estate, not by miles. I see about ten times more green than usual...

FrewdWoad

Of course you are LOL

FrewdWoad

Now add Valve.

FrewdWoad

Is it AI slop or just a long post? I'm honestly not sure.

OP if you did use AI, or you really wrote this and just used AI to fix your grammar, you need to say that at the start or end. Yes, on every post.

Just stay there all day, even when there's no kids, easy money 👍

Both the canary agent and whistleblower protocols are both interesting concepts!

Both concepts have been shown years ago to be fundamentally flawed and unlikely to help once we hit AGI. Though both have some success in agentic scenarios with current models:

https://share.google/aimode/xrqxlg4EPS3v1O4Si

It's crucial to understand that some of the smartest people alive have been trying to figure out how to make a future theoretical smarter-than-human AI safe for decades (since long before AGI was anywhere near close to existing) and have only found solutions that do not work.

That's why they started the Pause AI movement and wrote books like "If anyone builds it, everyone dies". I really wish it was luddites, and not the people who have gamed out the scenarios most thoroughly, but that's not true at all.

Humanity's very best researchers in both academia and frontier AI company labs don't have any way of making AGI safe and won't for a long time (if ever).

The real difference is the speed it reads the code.

It gets it wrong and corrects itself in minutes, runs all the tests, fixes the seeders it missed... does most of what a competent senior rev does but much faster.

Checking it's work is annoying and slow, but for most enterprisey business software in popular languages, it really became a lot more useful at the beginning of this year.

The real answer is in-person handwritten exams.

But they won't do it because it's slightly more expensive.

They'd rather risk irrelevancy (I'm certainly taking degrees earned recently with a grain of salt, as someone who hires people).

FrewdWoad

she’s already MADE her decision

This always gets downvoted by the under-35 childfree crowd on reddit, but studies show many women and men suddenly 180 on this later in life. They hold a friend's baby and the hormones kick in.

Unfortunately you can't rely on that (and there's weirdly obsessive young Redditors trying to hide rational discussion about this by downvoting).

FrewdWoad

Sounds fine.

Some young people do get overly interested in reading about sex, but it's a natural curiosity and much better than a real porn addiction.

FrewdWoad

So weird people keep insisting the one inch punch must be fake, when there's literally hundreds of videos of people doing it, since before gen AI or even CGI 😂

Like this guy:

https://www.reddit.com/r/BeAmazed/comments/185v6qc/one_inch_punch_demonstration_from_one_of_top_10/

...who started doing all his videos with relatives and chickens in the background because people insisted the footage must have been edited 🤦

FrewdWoad

Yep, hard rule of no screens in bedrooms. No need for them to ever be there.

FrewdWoad

For starters, no unsupervised YouTube.

That's a much bigger problem than just a few specific slop shows.

Strongly recommend Daniel Tiger and Charlie and Lola as being like Bluey in that they are

a) fun enough for adults to watch too (together) and

b) they demonstrate good behaviour (healthy conflict resolution, coping skills, emotional regulation, good parenting, etc)

FrewdWoad

The loud voices dominate, and the thoughtless folks are the loudest.

One interesting factor is porn guilt:

Reddit (and the internet in general) has a noisy contingent of mostly young boys/men who were raised in a religion that frowns on pornography, but are now addicted to it. (Reddit is one of the main online destinations for porn).

There's a large American Christian contingent on the English-speaking web.

These kids (mistakenly) feel that their guilt about it comes from their religious background, not from seeing something that humans naturally feel is private, nor participating in something that is often degrading to women, and is usually made by taking advantage of victims of poverty and/or drug addiction.
