We agree. We have to fix this gap. (By this gap, I mean Rules Hub running after notifications, not before them like automod as you described.)

We won't consider this tool “ready” until it can prevent harmful content (and related notifs) from reaching anyone.

Ha! I like this question. Nope -- the goal isn't to penalize mods for adopting easier-to-use tools.

Moderation is a lot more than clicking "remove." There are plenty of parts of running a community that LLMs and automations will never replace (nor would we want them to). Building culture, making judgment calls, having conversations, to name a few. The tools are there to handle repetitive tasks, not replace the people behind the community. We may need to rethink how we technically consider mods active vs inactive, we will work with you all as we think through new definitions.

Today we’re only focused on migrating the enforcement capabilities of automod (flag, report, remove, etc) over to Rules Hub. That could change, but we won’t remove any capabilities until we have another solution in place that works better.

These examples are exactly why we're running these systems in parallel as we test with communities. We don't expect every automod workflow to move to rules hub and we’re not going to force every moderation flow through an LLM. Our goal is to build a toolkit that supports a mix of intent-based and deterministic rules that's easier and more powerful than today's mix of YAML, regex, and filters.

We also don't expect (or want) mods to blindly trust an LLM. Rules Hub includes a testing sandbox so you can see how rules will behave before turning them on (instead of having to create a test community or just testing them live), along with performance logs showing why rules trigger so you can adjust and fine-tune them.

Reasonable question. We talked about this. Ultimately, we don't want multiple overlapping systems that mods have to juggle between forever. We want one set of better tools that are easier to learn and maintain, and more powerful. And until the tools are ready (and actually better) we won't remove anything.

You’re right -- Rules Hub can't and won't replace every action automod handles. Our goal isn’t to force every moderation workflow into an LLM. We’re building a broader toolkit (including Rules Hub, Automations, Post & Comment Guidance, some we haven’t thought of yet) to support both intent-based and deterministic workflows. And we want to put all of that into a central place (i.e. a hub). This future is still far away. But it’s the future we’re building toward.

(Noting also that automod does more than just enforcement actions; that’s just all we’re talking about in all of this.)

Rules hub is still early days, so nothing’s changing right now. And nope, it doesn't yet come close to all of automod’s functionality or use cases (filtering specific usernames is one of them). While these are some of the specific gaps we're closing in partnership with mods in our early access program, we also don't expect every automod config to end up in rules hub. Some workflows are just a more natural fit for automations, and we’re expanding those capabilities as well.

We’d love to have you test those features when they’re ready? If you’re interested, please let us know.

This is something that’s come up a few times in our conversations with mods. We don’t have a solution for it yet, but it’s exactly the type of workflow we’re thinking about as we continue building out rules hub, automations, and the broader mod toolkit.

Yep, completely optional. If they’re not a good fit for your community, you can turn them off entirely.

Also, really glad to hear automations has helped you cut back on some of your automod usage (that’s exactly why we built the feature). If your community works best with more hands-on conversations around rules and behavior, that’s fine too. The goal is to give mods more options, not launch a one-size-fits-all feature.

Yep, you’re right. It’s not even close to there yet. And we won’t sunset anything until it works for good and bad eggs alike.

There are categories of rules (nuanced civility, or communities w/complex automod configs) that Rules Hub can’t handle today. That’s why we’re working with mod teams to test the new tools alongside your old tools to find the gaps and close them before expanding further.

For newly created communities, Automod is still available. Rules Hub is there from day one because we think it’s a much easier place for new mods to get started.

That’s a good concern. The tool defaults to auto-report, so that mods can observe what gets flagged, first. It’s up to mods to decide when to change this to auto-remove or auto-filter (if at all), once you trust the system. There’s also an insights tab that mods can use to monitor how the tool is performing and make changes if needed.

We’ve seen those theories too and want to put them to bed!

Today there is a 500 character limit when creating a rule. We also know a lot of communities use their wikis as a rules overflow for more context. Over time, we’d like Rules Hub to incorporate that broader context too. If you have examples where the current limits are getting in the way, we’d love to see them; that’ll help guide things as we continue to build out additional capabilities.

Absolutely. We plan to host a Moddit on this topic. Sounds like you're already on it, but for lurkers with the same question, make sure to join r/ModEvents to stay tuned for new events we'll be adding to the schedule!

Our goal is to get Rules Hub to be better at enforcement actions than Automod. When (and only when) that’s proven, we will migrate Automod enforcement capabilities to Rules Hub.

We don’t have an internal timeline for this, we’re working with communities (700 now and expanding) to get this where it needs to be before anything changes.

You can! Sign up here, and we’ll reach out directly with more information + when we’ve enabled this feature in your community.

Realistically, it’ll be a few weeks because there are a few feature enhancements we want to finish before this next round of expansion.

First, thank you. The time and effort you’ve put into this network, including with admins, is remarkable. Making sure your impact is recognized is the intention behind the roles we’re creating – either Alumni where your efforts are acknowledged, or Advisor, where you’re able to stay involved in a consultant-type capacity, even if you’re no longer part of the active mod team. These roles are still in development and we’re considering cases very similar to yours as we build them out.

Most of these will be taken from me and given to whichever rando shows up and asks for them.

I do want to assure you that this is not the case; it would be a disservice to the communities you built. For the communities you end up leaving, here’s what you can expect:

• Most impacted communities have mods who will remain on the team. These mods can recruit additional mods to help build up the team (please reach out to us via r/ModSupport modmail if you would like assistance or support in doing so)
• If there are no mods who choose to stay, you can opt to recruit a new team so that you can choose who to pass the torch to.
• If you don’t want to choose the next team, we will restrict the community until we can find a suitable mod team. For large communities that are unmoderated (as a part of this change or otherwise), we seek out active members of the community and run mod calls outside of our r/RedditRequest process. We’ll select multiple people who can work together as a team and will assist them through the transition.

All of those options take time, of course. We’ve extended our transition window to March 31, 2026 to allow for that and we're here to help throughout.

In the scenario above, nothing will happen unless you already moderate 5 other communities with over 100k visitors. If you do, you will receive a message notifying you that you are out of compliance with these limits. Once you receive that message, you can decide which 5 subreddits you’d like to prioritize, and will have 30 days to plan next steps, which may mean either stepping down from the mod team or moving into an alumni or other advisor role (as mentioned in the post).

Visitors are based on a rolling 28 day average of unique visitors. This excludes visitors utilizing anonymous browsing mode and known bots. Visits include: visiting a post directly, the subreddit page, wiki pages, mod pages, etc. (Views by logged out users are included in this count).

Just answered that one here!

Yes for now, but eventually no. We are planning to remove subscriber count from all publicly visible surfaces. But during this transition, you will still be able to see that number on your Mod Insights page.

All this said, we do plan to keep subscriber numbers accessible via the API to ensure continued support for existing tools or bots that depend on that number.

Content removed by both mods and Reddit will show the content as removed by a moderator. In most cases, mods are getting to the content before we are so the removals will reflect that.

Yes, direct links to mod removed posts will still allow users to view all comments on those posts - the only change is on all platforms those users will not be able to read the title, any body text, or images of those posts.
