That's not being average, that's being mediocre. The creator here just doesn't understand what "average" means.

The books doesn't shy away from the fact that his behavior is very fucked up and is the result of (1) he's pretty abnormal to begin with and (2) just absolute fuckloads of trauma. He pretty regularly wrestles with the desire to stop doing what he's doing. A couple times he really considers settling down, especially after his old commanding officer dies and wills him his house.
