He got his first UFC HW championship title in 1997 when he beat Maurice Smith. It was later vacated due to contract dispute, after which Couture fought outside of UFC for few bouts. He later came back to UFC and won the UFC Heavyweight Championship in 2000, against Kevin Randleman. Third time being in 2007 against Tim Sylvia here
