Emotions are not created in the neocortex tho, but in the area mammals all share. In that sense I’m pretty sure our mammalian pets do experience emotions, and theirs are probably rather similar to ours as humans. Rage, fear, contentment, bonding, playfulness, boredom etc.

When I look at my cat I can tell from her behaviour she feels safe with me. She wants regular belly rubs from me, which my husband and daughter are not allowed to do. When I’m very ill she looks after me in her catty way. When she’s scared she’ll hide but once the threat seems past she’ll come to me for reassurance. When something stresses her she’ll come ask for my help, and then will want petting to destress. She clearly experiences different emotions, and communicates them. That’s not anthropomorphism, it’s simply mammalian experience to my mind.

I still grin whenever I think of when I met my now husband, and after a bit told him about my family. I had no contact with my parents at the time. He didn’t really get it, he wanted to meet my mother, things could/should be fixed etc. I was ok with trying as it had been a few years and I felt I was in a different place. Anyway, half a year later he heaved a big sigh, looked at me and said: I now understand why you went no contact with her, you were absolutely right, and I’m an idiot.

For most people it’s impossible to imagine why for some it’s essential to get away from their family. I was always happy for those who didn’t get it, it usually meant they have a normal, functional family. But it is a lonely experience, partly because of the pushback you get. I hope you’ll manage to get away soon and live life on your own :).

It reminds me of when my father was terminally ill, and he only had a few weeks left. I was sitting next to him while he slept, holding his hand, and I got the feeling he was very far away. I tried to find him and experienced a ‘different level of existence’, and then promptly got kicked out as I got told it wasn’t for me just yet lol. When he woke up he said he had had a rather odd but pleasant experience, and that he had been somewhere else entirely. It still intrigues me all these years later.

My dad got dentures in his early 30’s. Bad teeth hygiene no doubt, smoking, very sensitive and finnicky gums prone to infection (which I inherited). He was a purebred Casanova, charming and wooing his way through life. I don’t think he was selfconscious about it, he was far too comfortable with himself for that.

My mother had completely forgotten he had dentures. It was never important to his partners. I’m more anxiety prone like you so I get it, but it’s not important. I never thought anything of it as a child, I never judged him for it later, and his partners had no issue with it at all. It’s just life, most of us don’t come out entirely unscathed :). You don’t need to apologise for it, or justify it, or whatever. It’s simply fact, and it’s ok.

Cycling and climbing stairs have that effect as well iirc, a nurse told me when we were discussing my mother’s vascular issues and early dementia. I love walking and hope to be able to do that for many more years, and I always take the stairs. If I ever get too wobbly for that tho I’ll get an exercise bike! :D

I vaguely remember reading about differences in behaviour regarding their territory. The boys will have a larger territory and roam more if they can go outside, the girls will stay closer to home and will be more protective of their territory. With the cats I’ve had so far this has been the case, my lady cat is a fierce defender of our tiny garden but will stay close to it/in it, while my boys would stay out longer and explore more. If you keep a cat indoors this’ll most likely not matter.

Afaik boy cats are more susceptible to kidney/urinary tract issues, one of my boy cats died from kidney failure.

Regarding bonding, showing affection, in general cats being cats, gender has never seemed to matter to me. They have clear personalities, and that matters, but it isn’t a gendered thing.

I prefer blue cheese without anything. I love the intense flavour. It tastes amazing after a sip of whisky tho, my one exception :D

I’ve never been a huge fan of the flavour of coffee myself. Years ago I tried matcha and I love the taste, and the much more calm and longer duration of its caffeine buzz. Perhaps worth a try if you haven’t yet :). Cheap matcha is usually bitter and rather acidic, higher quality ones are rather sweet and grassy in flavour.

That’s a lot of life for a 21 year old. You will be remembered, and will live on in many hearts no doubt :).

I don’t think you’re immature or wrong. I wouldn’t like someone either who’d do what she did in that situation. Imo you’re perfectly in the right to not bend, or try smooth things over. In essence you put the responsibility for this behaviour exactly where it should be, with your dad and his wife. And either they sort it out between themselves, or they won’t, but it’s their choices.

That said, as others already pointed out, this can create conflict and distance for a long time. If you don’t want that to happen, you’ll need to actively participate in some solutions, and some clear boundaries going forward.

I’d say the same thing if I were your mother, I wouldn’t want you to make these kind of drastic choices over my sake. But truthfully, it’s much more about your principles and your sense of loyalty, and that is about more than just protecting your mother. So if you want your dad to figure it out himself, you have every right.

Before I saw your edit I figured she really misses you on days you are away. Personally I’d go slightly crazy if my partner wouldn’t let me shower in peace for 20 minutes lol, but if it works for you two… everyone has their quirks and what not.

Does this mean he’s eating your dinner too? Because I’d be livid over that. And I’d make sure he feels guilty, not you!

Why would you hate yourself for it? You hid it because it had negative consequences at the time, it’s perfectly logical and very human to do so. As long as you hate yourself for it, you’re basically reinforcing that you can’t change back. But you can! Even if it takes time, and it develops in baby steps :). Perhaps practise, with something small, and in private. Embrace your inner child who wants to express herself. It’s still in you, I have no doubt about that.

I’m so sorry, I can only imagine the deep pit of despair, guilt, sadness and pain you’re in. I wish you much love, support and big hugs from loved ones. You will be in my thoughts.

I have no idea. I have adored cats from early on, they usually adore me too. They are my vibe, effortlessly. I’m guessing we humans who love cats have felt this ever since they put their lil paws on ground near us. I have no doubt we slow blinked at them 3000 years ago already, and went omg awww too cute I’m meeeeelting then too lol. It’s one of the reasons the ancient Egyptions have my undying love. They were rather nuts about m too :D
