I think they thought they were going to wind up in a better position. They'd keep all the H3 deadenders (honestly, a smart read on their part, I would've expected at least some of the cultists to side with Ethan) and bring back all the former fans who left because of how much Ethan sucked.

Their problem is that they think of interpersonal and social politics with the same braindead approach that liberals apply to thinking about regular politics. Liberals were so sure that if they just hammered on what a mean guy Donald Trump is, they'd win. Politics is denuded of its ability to effect meaningful positive change, so it's just reality TV now. What they forgot is that voters don't like that state of affairs.

The H3 goons approached this situation the same way. If we just position ourselves and our deadenders as oppositional to Ethan, then the other people who are oppositional to Ethan will come back to us! And why wouldn't they think that when that's the entire animating principle behind the broader anti-Hasan coalition. Asmongold, DGG, Ethan and H3, none of these people care about anything other than Hasan Bad, and they don't realize that normal people don't operate that way.

It's also linked to the way that all criticism of H3 and Ethan was always met with the thought-terminating cliche of "snark". They could only conceive of opposition as being personally driven. People didn't hate Ethan because of his politics and his noxious behavior, they hated him just because. It's a smaller-scale manifestation of the weird Zionist canard of replacing "Israeli" with "Jewish" in various contexts as if it means anything. We don't hate Israel because of what they do, we hate them because of who they are.
