Yeah, I would say hatchery. It’s not the most exciting but you will learn a lot about the species being raised, life history, genetics plans, run sizes, as well as water quality and some hands on mechanics.
I never had a hatchery position but have helped out during some of my early gigs and seems like it can be pretty interesting. Just try not to get stuck with only hatchery experience if you’re end goal is to become a field bio. But getting an in with a state agency is always the way to go!

To add to this, no matter how it looks from your perspective, we are a part of nature not apart from nature!

I have 2 B.Sc (bio and fisheries) I’ve dropped out of two different masters programs. I currently work in local government doing research, filed work, spatial analysis, going to conferences. Skills out play degrees (most of the time). Don’t be too hard on yourself.

At an Italian chain I worked at when it was your last night and you had maybe one or two tables left they would soak you with water, soda, any liquid and then give you a good ol fashioned antiquing, bag of flower all over you!! Watching em go back to their tables was always the best!!
Edit: a word

Used to work at a pizza place in college, harmless pranks included:
-telling kids to grab a dough repair kit from the walk-in to fix a ripped dough
-go grab a left handed knife
-mop the freezer
-replace the air in the fridge by making them hold up a bag and capture all the air coming out of the vent dump it out of the walk-in and left the fresh air fill the space
-even convinced a few kids we had an organic garden on the roof and had them go up there to grab some fresh veggies for the salad line
Good times

Wearing the ballroom jeans currently, switched over after my original go to Levi’s 514s kept ripping with in a year! Been happy with the Duluth’s, stretch is a tad more than I’d normally like but great everyday pant!

This is super helpful! I work for my local county and have recently began incorporating drone flight data into my work and am beginning to work on some spatial analysis problems, as well as some thermal mapping. I was deciding between Q and ESRI ($1,400/yr for just my license).
Think I am going to go the Q route, my colleague (our hydrogeologist) is already a wiz with Qgis. Thanks for spelling it out!
Cheers from a freshwater scientist trying to become a spatial analyst haha!!

Deftones white Pony tour in 2001, glassjaw opened up for them, I didn’t know music could sound like that! Bought the album at the show and shortly after found Every Time I Die, hooked since!!

I have the 661 D30 pads and they are great, light weight, and great protection! And they are soft so you can fold em up into your bag or keep em around your ankles as you climb

I work for my local county in water resources. I consider myself a freshwater and salmonid ecologist. I do a range of things from downloading groundwater and climate data from fixed stations, conduct instream flow measurements, and temperature studies, additionally I have my part-107 and operate our new drone program where I collect both visual and IR data for mapping and spatial analysis work. I also work with local salmon enhancement groups on salmon recovery projects and help our outreach teams train volunteers about salmon.
It’s a rather unique position I’ve landed and feel super lucky to have it. Lots and lots of jobs before this one, lots of seasonal work and just collecting skills and changing interests as I’ve moved through my career.
Currently pivoting to ecohydrology and spatial analysis with an emphasis on salmonid recovery and water quality/quantity.
Hope that helps! feel free to DM if you have more questions.

I agree with this. Work first see what you are actually interested in and what actually makes sense for a career.
I have been in the field for 11yrs with only a B.Sc. Just now in talks to start my graduate work and I’m 42. Work seasonal gigs, get field work experience, meet people, network, see what working and getting by in the field feels like for you before pursuing something advanced, unless you either plan on going into academia or have a very serious passion for something.

Fellow local government employee here (also 42), I work in climate and water resources sciences. The work is steady, I’ve got some project freedom, and like you said benefits are great! I work 4x10s (really more like 4x8s - but as long as the work is done I’m good) and the option to WFH 2 days a week! Lucky enough to live in a state where our gov jobs come with union protection and a pension!
I could make more in the private sector, but I’ve tried consulting twice and that was SO much more stressful!

42 here, avid mtn biker, backpacker, outdoor enthusiast. No real aches or pains to speak of. I ride mt bikes with a group of guys ages 40-47. Just try to take care of the vessel as much as possible while still having a good time!!

I enjoy periodically pouring a nice burbon and perusing through [r/Listentothis](r/Listentothis) and I have found all type of interesting music from a wide range of genres, always makes for a fun evening.
Additionally, using Spotify radio for bands I like and finding similar bands that’s way.

I remember being 12 or so back 96 reading the lyrics then having to look up all the references to understand. Shit straight radicalized me!

Just wait till the wild runs of Chum start in McLane and Kennedy!! You can actually watch them spawn in the wild, not just end up in a hatchery run!

Did MBO this year, Oakridge is definitely a vibe, trails are a ton of fun, but not a ton of amenities in that town
