A quick search showed me the Sicily Divide for a gravel route. I'd imagine Sicily would be relatively easy to reach, though perhaps time consuming coming from all the way up North. It'll be warmer, though I don't know the route and elevation to judge if it'll get too cold up in the hills.

When I cycled down the southern side four years ago I ran into what seemed like an adolescent bear who was quite eager to get close. I was lucky to run into a family driving by in their car who picked me up on a whim, only for the bear to chase after the car.
