Kinda strange, as that's most useful use case of this feature, I only use pinned/essential if i need to raise tab for a *certain* time, so it wouldn't scroll form view.
Also, I if you delete these "empty" workspaces, would they get deleted in sync too?
I almost wanted to delete them thinking they were empty, would a bit of a loss...
EDIT: Also, isn't it like a feature in trailer? They don't pin these tabs, so a bit of misinformation is going there.

You don't have to strictly adhere to Firefox standards, you can have your own in form of JSON
Limit is your account storage, and single document size, but zen could just use multiple, like they should anyway.

and so I've been beta testing a project for the past 2 months that's specifically trying to fix that. team of devs behind it actually know what they're doing, they've worked on other projects before, not just randoms throwing something together.
Without decentralized architecture this is just pure BS.
You will be fine as long as you don't touch "hot" material, or just get big enough, then you will be crushed like rest of these sites. If devs really wanted resilient website, they would use decentralized hosting such as Flux etc.
All these sites are doing is putting enough content to gather some interest, then scrape away the rest.
They could even cooperate on "shared" decentralized hosting and split the bill on % of network usage, but no, lets just host same scraped content 15x times just for it to be inaccessible anyway in a year or two.
And if you are saying decentralized can't work, then check out how decentralized DNS works for starters

Not even high-end. I remember it was shortly after the launch of this expac, I was doing this event in second map where you defend outpost, where some dudes in skyscales were just hovering and being mad at me for just doing this event as it was suboptimal, and it was being shorter to just let it fall, from what i could understand. They wrote in map chat to me to stop doing it, which i didn't see at first, then they just called me blind idiot etc. (I don't exactly remember specific words) On confrontation the main talker apologized, but randoms on map even said they didn't see any insult to apologize for.
That's my 2 cents, which discouraged me from playing GW2 for a while, where you could be shunned just bc of doing content, starting events etc.

But it could be made to work realtime, yeah? You would just need to write it as mod, then read from UI (or session file) and add/remove tabs dynamically. Problem would be not getting rate limited by GH API, so other solution would have to be in place for realtime sync.
I did have it on hold but maybe your attempt gave me some courage to push further with this idea. I just don't know if I can find time to finish it before Zen devs get it done themself, hopefully soon™️.
PS. Isn't sqlite db getting phased out in place of json session file?
KaCuQ
If you are open source then fine, else I have nothing more to say.
How are you achieving your sync? Manually overwriting new session file? Or more on client side with dynamic tab opening/closing? Do you have backup, as in case of ex. power outage during saving?
I assume syncing is done through your server, not P2P?
You could also add visual representation of tabs with each workspace etc. to visualize/discard what you don't want to sync.
Are you doing this as Zen mod (Sine) or standalone app?
KaCuQ
For all I care, they could just give guardian mercenary window and call it a day. For spectres, they could come with something new, where you predefine list of monsters you summon on certain summon quota. They could even create new item that itemizes normal monster corpses so they occupy slot. Minions are popular enough that they warrant such special treatment.
KaCuQ
Yes, it's not Fennec-cost...
If all you are doing is animating just sidebar dis/appearance then fine, Zen already handles content view resizing in one step to avoid repaints, but if you are changing actual browser content view (one with websites) then I reckon this could be laggy on lower end pc's.
Will test later on Linux.
This is identical to what happens if you drag Firefox's native sidebar handle or resize the window — it's the content area reflowing to a new width, not a Fennec-specific cost.
And if you notice anything, dragging sidebar handle in Zen and moving it around is quite laggy as well, at least in my case, as it is doing multiple repaints per second.
KaCuQ
How's performance on SPA websites like Twitch? Most browser opt for sudden transition cause of these reasons, where each change in size causes whole site to repaint, especially horrendous with React.
KaCuQ
But they aren't in KDE, at least? They just default chrome ones, so ugly ones, Kate and others use system ones.
But okay, no point arguing anymore, as you are clearly in favor of Vivaldi (chromium)
KaCuQ
Nowhere I said native?
Then this is sadly dealbreaker for me as I hate inconsistent UI, where most is changed and only sore thumb (context menu) remain.
It would be logical if they changed in the future to allow it, as they are already building most of the UI with HTML. Firefox does this fine.
KaCuQ
You must have misunderstood me. I'm talking about underlaying HTML/CSS, not just items in these menus. I'm talking about how it looks. Last time I tried, it wasn't allowed to be changed by CSS.
KaCuQ
Off topic, but is there any push towards modifiable context menus and generally most elements? I just simply dislike chrome generic one and their UI. I like that you can modify "most" stuff, but not context menu. Stuff like this still keeps me in Firefox ecosystem with its userChrome.
KaCuQ
There is also a portrait packs mods that do this for you. There is one nsfw that comes to mind.
KaCuQ
Looking at docs they still aren't stable and have problem with unused vars warning across different sections (html/js)...
KaCuQ
Well,
In your first screenshot, you showed a "tab id='1770120083493-25'" in some sort of HTML document. Not sure what you were looking at, but that "id" appears to be a javascript timestamp (1770120083493) followed by something which might be the actual ID (25). The timestamp translates to 2026-02-03_12:01:23.493 UTC.
really sounds a lot like clanker would say among other :|
KaCuQ
Well, we have reached to misunderstanding I presume, while you are talking about browsers add-ons scope, I was talking more in Firefox Internals scope.
Screenshot was from Firefox Internal UI, describing tab element you see on Zen (so Firefox basically)
I was just wondering if you could pull something up for, specifically for Zen, that could sync entire tabs state to another pc. And I'm talking about interactive merging, not some tabs state DB file just moving around. This can't really exist in add-ons scope, so you would need access to FF internals scripts to circumvent Zen features, like workspaces among others, which FXAutoconfig provides, so it would only apply to few people on Zen who want this.
So, on this note, I close our little conversation about Firefox, as our interests misalign.
BTW, your manner of speech really resembles something popular recently… But I hope I'm wrong.
KaCuQ
I was only speaking hypothetically if Zen provides such compatibility, I didn't say it was possible now.
Tab Session Manager says I have about ~600 tabs, which could be true, dunno is this takes workspaces into account, I don't think so, but still, it wouldn't pass 2k.
If what are you saying is true, that this ID starts from 1, then why mine are so big? Are you talking about number after dash?
I'm not necessarily speaking in terms of Extensions Scope, just in general. I have though of writing a private modification to Zen via fxautoconfig adding this capability. But, I was just stuck on how would tabs from different platform integrate, I'm wondering how Firefox handles it natively so that 2 tabs on same URL are synced alongside.
EDIT: But it seems to just pass data parameters without any sort of unique key, so it doesn't deal with duplicates sadly :(
I wonder how far could I go trying to add ID to each tab on startup, which is then synced from file. Even assuming clean exits, it still seems like a lot of work trying to stitch this data to tabs.
KaCuQ
Well, point 1 could be fixed by just extension saving only 1 window if sync is enabled, but it has to have a way to detect it and get latest state, so there's hope in this. Saving multiple windows seems redundant if they all have semi-same state.
About IDs, are you sure about that, or are we talking about different kind of ID? I have many tabs stockpiled, but NOT THAT many.
KaCuQ
Uhh, that is crazy with these different IDs. So essentialy all tab session extensions will just assume it's completely another window and save it as such?
On another note do you know if you send a tab to different pc, or just open from Sync, it gets its ID from that tab or it is generated anew?

Here's guide from users from forum, from skim reading Linux version just runs java file directly without need for .exe. While your mods and saves, are in /home/<user>/.local/share/starsector/
KaCuQ
Then idk.
But when you install something in pamac-menager, gui for PAMAC, and you search for it in installed packages, you have tab with installed files there, maybe check that out. Later maybe I will install that to try. For now I'm using windows version with proton for mods/dual booting sake.
KaCuQ
If not in /usr/share/starsector, check home folder, maybe.
KaCuQ
But they are... Other commenter pointed out 1 I personally use too, just that they are tailored to Firefox and won't work with workspaces. I had mixed feeling about it, sometimes it would save workspace tabs too, and sometimes don't, and even while they save fine, you probalby couldn't import it exactly the same as it wouldn't save workspace specific tab data, and essential state too for the fact, and other zen features a forgot about.
I was trying out creating custom JS for this in fact, to be maybe published to Sine or self use. My aim was more of a sync between multiple platform, 1:1 sync that deletes tabs deleted on other platform etc. Something alike to how people were doing with cloning their profile folder, but in "safer" and more focused form. I quite got around to extracting browsers tabs from all workspaces in realtime, just creating new tabs in specific workspace was what I was stuck on. And around this time, Zen was planning to have rework how tabs are stored in system, so I'm in hiatus for a while while waiting for this if I could be doing unnecessary work.
While I read your comment about wanting to create something similar I could even give you glimpse of my not-so-much-done prototype, but please, no "vibe-code". I get AI is sometimes usefull, and I use it myself for some tips, but giving it full reign on some project without supervise is just asking for problems down the line.
Maybe I will ask around in Sine Discord for slight help and release it as mod there.
Thanks for listening to my TED talk.
