No, they're reptiles...

Kevo_CS

Style of play? I'll start by saying that's literally always going to be subjective, not a question of which team played better. However as a Mexican-American, I watched all of both teams games and I just find that a weird opinion. Did you watch USA vs Paraguay? USA vs Australia?

Just to be clear on style of play, would you rather watch Arsenal or Barcelona?

I can kind of understand the defensive part, since the US as I said from the beginning was a team that was likely to either win big or lose big, but I mean as a fan I'd rather watch my team dominate the ball and creating chances. Despite the US always playing on a razor's edge they had only conceded 1 goal outside of the glorified friendly against Turkiye before shitting the be against Belgium.

About South Korea, I don't think anything has necessarily happened to them. The gap between roughly the 10th best team in the world and the 24th or so just isn't very big. They finished 4th when they hosted in 2002, but even most Koreans I know think that was a little bit fixed. Other than that they've made it out of the group twice in their history. 2010 and 2022. A better question would be what was special about those South Korean teams.

Kevo_CS

I think they're relatively similar

If what you're getting at is that Mexico's group was tougher than the US's group then I would point you to the same rankings you think are perfect in every way as Australia is currently ranked higher than South Korea. They were ranked two spots below South Korea when the tournament kicked off.

Here's the break down based on FIFA rankings before the tournament started

Mexico 1. South Korea (25) 2. Czechia (40) 3. South Africa (60)

USA 1. Turkiye (22) 2. Australia (27) 3. Paraguay (41)

The only thing different about our World Cup is that we expected more and were left disappointed and you expected to lose to England. Since when are "vibes" in any way an objective way to decide anything though?

Kevo_CS

I didn't say we had a better world cup... Why are you just making shit up? I said we had similar world cups and exited in the same round.

Why do you have some sort of need to convince yourself you did so much better than the US to feel good about how Mexico did?

Kevo_CS

Excuses.

That's all fine and good that you believe that. But it's all totally subjective that Mexico had a meaningfully better tournament.

You could just as easily look at the US tournament and come to the conclusion that the US smacked Paraguay and was afforded the luxury of coasting with a full bench squad in the 3rd game thanks to having won their first two games by with a combined score of 6-1 and against arguably better competition than Mexico faced. The entire basis of your opinion comes down to the fact that Mexico narrowly lost to England but the US lost handedly to Belgium. I watched both games by the way, and I have to say that games against England in the world cup are like Fool's Gold. If what you're hanging your hat on is that you played well but ultimately lost against England in the World Cup, then I'd say that's the same delusion US fans engaged in after 2022. We looked good against England in part because they were happy to let us play. Against Mexico it was because they weren't naive enough to try to outrun Mexico at altitude like Ecuador did. Against the US it was because they quite literally had more to lose from a loss than they had to gain from a win.

You don't have to agree with me on any of that, but at least have the common sense to acknowledge that what you're saying is clearly subjective and we're talking about an objective rating model as flawed as you or I think that algorithm may be.

Kevo_CS

Lol excuses for what? The only excuses I've read in this thread revolve around the complete and total denial that the US and Mexico did in fact get eliminated in the same round. They had extremely similar world cup outcomes and yet there are absurd justifications as to why "actually given the context Mexico had a better tournament".

Okay sure, let's suppose that context gives Mexico a slight edge... but 220 points is not a slight edge, and anybody who doesn't understand that must eat crayons for breakfast.

Kevo_CS

The fact that people actually ignorantly repeat this years later shows how deeply ironic this posts top comment really is.

Kevo_CS

They've also specifically focused on only opening locations on common road trip routes between major cities. People keep saying it's just a gas station convenience store like 7/11, but the strategy of 7/11 and similar convenience stores is to be nearby where you live and work because it's convenient to stop in quickly for a drink or a snack.

The Buc-ee's strategy on the other hand is to act as a much needed rest stop between cities with a big store for your snacks, drinks, or even merch. They're only special because they're good at marketing. If not for the way they market themselves almost exclusively on billboards every few miles letting you know how many miles away you are from the next Buc-ee's, they would just be seen as another Love's. But for someone who's never heard of Buc-ee's to see those signs, wonder what the hell it is, and to see a massive structure with a beaver statue at the entrance, it's easy to see how it makes an impression compared to something like 7/11.

Kevo_CS

Okay, but that's basically a long rant to say that the only thing you hate about it is that other people like it. As far as it being part of the Texas identity... Yeah... Ask a Californian what they think of In N Out. It's not exactly rocket science that a common shared experience in Texas gets treated a bit like part of the local identity. I lived in Dallas for a while when they didn't have any H-E-Bs and only had a Central Market near me, so I used to joke that going grocery shopping was a sure way to know that Dallas was more like Southern Oklahoma than North Texas. It's a joke because H-E-B is so ubiquitous everywhere else not because I'm bowing down to my H E Buddy overlord or orgasming about how much better H-E-B is than Walmart.

Kevo_CS

The fact that you felt the need to bring Buc-ee's or Rudy's into this makes me think you just feel the need to put down Texas chains because you've seen other people do it.

Rudy's is absolutely ordinary. Buc-ee's is obviously much nicer than a 7/11 but at the end of the day the only reason people like it is because when you go on a road trip and somebody needs to stop there's a comfort in knowing that you're not stopping at a run down or filthy shit show of a convenience store.

As for HEB, it's a grocery store chain with pretty extensive store brand items, so moving away or not having an HEB straight up just means not being able to find the same foods and it's surprising that people become perhaps irrationally attached? There are people who are irrationally attached to whether their Coca-Cola is made with real sugar or high fructose corn syrup and it's surprising that people get similarly attached to the only place that sells their favorite salsa, coffee creamer flavor, sandwich bread, etc?

Kevo_CS

Okay I'm just going to ask because I've been reading this thread and have seen you specifically make this comment several times, what is it about HEB specifically that you don't like? How could it seem like a cult?

In my experience the only people I've met in Texas who preferred a different grocery store are either part of the cult of Costco because they don't cook and love their precooked selection, or happen to live near a particularly nice Kroger which is totally fair but certainly an exception.

90% of my grocery shopping ends up coming from HEB because several of their store brand products are just better than I can find anywhere else. Not everything, but it's far and away true for my most common staples. Bread (HEB Bakery), Tortillas, Salsa, etc. I also pretty religiously shop the weekly ad for meat since often those prices are almost certainly being treated as loss leaders. No other grocery store near me is consistently or reliably as cheap as HEB when it comes to the basics.

That said if I'm shopping for frozen food I'm going to Costco. If I need a sauce, condiment, drinks, junk food, etc I'm totally fine with checking out Walmart or Krogers. But in my experience that leaves about 90% of my grocery shopping at HEB where I'm finding both the products I like more and the best price, so I'm just not sure what's not to like.

Kevo_CS

“There’s nothing special about HEB,” and everyone else is gonna stroke their whiskers and say, “Ya’ know, you’re right!” HEB does own Central Market, though, and I do love Central Market.

This is like saying that BMW is nothing special and you don't understand why people like them other than the fact that they own Rolls Royce.

Kevo_CS

You can't even call the sport by it's name.

Wow so edgy. Do you have any thoughts of your own or would you rather regurgitate some ignorant take that a 13 year old would find clever?

It's not a coincidence that other former English territories like Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa all call it soccer as well.

Kevo_CS

Tell me you don't know ball without telling me you don't know ball lol

Kevo_CS

I think it's hilarious that this is the part that both of y'all responded to as if you'e immediately ready to engage in whataboutism about how terrible Texas is.

Read that comment thread again and you'll find that somebody made a comment about Texans being dumb and uneducated based on something that they clearly don't actually know anything about. Then when I called them out somebody else chimed in with a total strawman as if I ever said that Texans are special hardworking people superior to all other states.

Who exactly is the one being condescending or hateful here?

Kevo_CS

Well if you're out of town and you're used to going to the original on Navigation then it's probably not really worth trying the Uptown/Galleria location. As far as the food or menu goes it's exactly the same, but the parking situation is more annoying. It is more conveniently located but that depends a whole lot on where you're staying anyway.

Kevo_CS

They also have a location near the Galleria. Those are the only two real Ninfa's even if reddit will insist that the real Ninfa's is now El Tiempo. The real business that they started and then sold/lost is now "The Original Ninfa's" and they have two locations which are both underrated at this point.

Kevo_CS

This is one of those things that's hard for us as fans to judge from the outside. Is there a link between Caserio and offensive coaching staff, because Caserio isn't letting DeMeco hire his guys or is it because DeMeco willingly defers to Caserio to hire the offensive coaching staff? If it's the former then Caserio has got to go, if it's the latter then DeMeco probably needs to go too.

Kevo_CS

I hope you understand that what you're saying is as idiotic as talking to somebody from abroad who's judging you because your country voted for Trump. No city, state, or community of any kind is a monolith. Except Texas of course. We're all just dumb and uneducated.

Seriously go find a windmill to fight and stop bothering me with your idiocy.

Kevo_CS

Go observe some windmills and pick a fight with them too

Kevo_CS

I for one am shocked that you would immediately jump to politics. Go pick a fight with somebody who votes red and stop stereotyping Texans. Goodbye.

Kevo_CS

More nature than Texas will ever have? Texas is literally the 2nd most biodiverse state in the country.

Kevo_CS

Texans don't look down on people outside of Texas. We just obviously take offense to idiotic comments like the one I responded to.

Reddit acts like Texas is some sort of backwards place where people ride horses everywhere. It's totally ironic that these are often the same opinions calling Texans dumb

Also exclusively outside of Texas, is the same thing as "Everyone outside of Texas". That's just a totally false equivalency which is the kind of thing I'm talking about here.

Kevo_CS

Nice. It takes a truly enlightened ally such as yourself to be able to look down on the state of Texas. If only us dumb Texans could be as educated and progressive as you maybe we could come up with real zingers like this.
