The real question is, how much more room for improvement is there to be behind on?
There are currently a few issues to consider. Such as they have already data mined all the public data, now trying to buy out private data but they are effectively out of new data to feed the AI. Then there is the issue of poisoning, where we are getting to a point where more and more internet content is AI based, this means that you are going to end up with regressions and more slop.
Then of course there is the other factors such as none of the companies are making money on AI, it has been a huge money sink. The hardware cost going through the roof like ram, society cost as no government or company is ready for what AI brings (just like they weren't ready for social media impact, but much much worse), the risk of the dead internet theory happening, job losses, electricity and water consumption on local communities and etc.
Of course AI is happening one way or another, once the flood gates are open there is no way to close them
That said, waiting can also have its advantages of a crash happening and picking it up on the cheap.
"AI" companies make no profit, its a money sink hence why they are so eager for government to fund them with tax payer money.
The only ones that are making money is the hardware vendors.
