Long before Christianity, when Japanese were mostly Shintoist/Animist, Buddhism came around 6 CE and somewhat successful especially compared to Christianity. But at that time Japan was not as homogeneous as it is later, there were different ethnicities and cultures. So that may be the difference of acceptance between Christianity and Buddhism. Also consider that right now Japan is mostly atheist. But very interesting aspect of Japan is when they convert or take something out of their culture they kind of modify it to fit it their culture.
