Source: am trans and used to develop since way before i realized i was, and had the same issue where old commits contained my deadname

transitioning is a complicated process, and how a trans person sees their past self differs a lot between individuals. for some people it is similar (but not exactly) how you described it: the person wants nothing to do with their pre-transition self. for others, (including myself, and, i assume the maintainer of the library in question), they are still the same person as before the transition who just happens to use a different name. they still want to get credit for the work they put into the project in the past, etc.

the term "deadname" doesn't imply that the whole pre-transition personality is dead post-transition. a lot of trans people keep their hobbies/interests, manners, and other things relating to their past (this is one of the reasons you will see a disproportionately big number of trans women in online games/spaces, and vice-versa for trans men). the only reason the old name is called a "deadname" is because a lot of names have a very strong tie to gender, and using a trans person's old name can cause dysphoria.

tl;dr: "deadname" doesnt imply the whole pre-trans personality is "dead"

theres nothing wrong with escapism in any form, and this is one of the most harmless ones out there. youre not gonna get anywhere with this moral policing
